If this is your first playthrough of the game or even your second or third you're likely asking yourself "What gear should I be using and where do I get it from?".
In this section of the FAQ, we'll be going over the recommended gear for specific level ranges and break down where to get it and why it's important to have.
Below is a list with different gear pieces and sets for various levels that we recommend with different pieces available at different level ranges depending on your playstyle.
If you would like to see the stats of the item and learn how to get it, click the name of the Gear Set or Gear Piece(s). Be sure to check the Notes as there may be useful tips or important information about the Gear!
IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER
You will likely noticed that our Recommended Gear list below does not include the updated Level 50 Dragonspyre Gear or the Level 100 Khrysalis Gear.
This is because while a lot of these gear pieces are good, they are not school locked like Darkmoor and Exalted Duels nor is a drop guaranteed.
As such, unless you need these pieces for PvP purposes or have a coordinated group, we do not recommend farming for them as they will be replaced in the near future.

Aside from the gear in the previous section that we recommend, there may be some other gear sets or pieces that you will want to farm for or craft based on what you need and what you plan to do. For example, most players don't need the updated Level 50 Dragonspyre Gear dropped by Malistaire and others but those intending to do Level 50 PvP may want some or all of it.

Author's Note: I personally highly recommend investing into the Wintertusk Crafted Gear during a first or even second playthrough of the game to assist with the challenge that Waterworks and Zigzag will bring. Additionally, I would recommend crafting the Level 86 and 96 Boots to help give you a boost in Damage and Block as you progress to the end of mid-game and prepare for more challenging content.

Between the two tables, you've probably noticed that Level 100+ is one of those ranges where there's a lot of different gear options that come from different sources and it can be quite overwhelming for players new and old.
To the right (below on Mobile), you can find a table that will tell you which gear pieces from the Darkmoor and Exalted sets are best to use for each school and is credited to Dreadful of Wizard101 Central.
Using the Malistaire piece instead of the recommended Exalted piece or vice versa for any school is perfectly fine and we suggest using whichever one you have or can get the easiest as the stat differences for most are very small.
All Boss Names are clickable and will take you to the Wizard101 Central Wiki page for the associated gear piece.
If you'd like to see a more in-depth breakdown piece by piece, please visit the original article by Dreadful here. You can also see Swordroll's Side-by-Side Comparisons for each school's hats and robes.

If you're new to Wizard101 or have been away from the game for a while, you may be unaware of the changes that were made to select Gear Sets for Levels 50, 100 and 150.
In the Spring 2022 Update, Kingsisle audited the pre-existing Malistaire Gear and Dropped Boss Wands as well as the Morganthe Gear and Merciless Gear to be more in-line with the stat formulas they intend to implement going forward. Included in this audit was the changing of Boss Drop Pools to spread out the audited and new gear across multiple bosses in each area.
