FERNANDO GRILLO
(Foggia, 1945 - Perugia, 2013)
Double bass player and composer, he was one of the most original protagonists of music in the 20th century, creating a new literature for the solo double bass.
He created new techniques of sound production and musical expression for stringed instruments. The aspect of visuality, the gesture that precedes sound, his "sound sculptures" have proposed a new psychology of listening. The unheard timbral event, the instrumental invention, the spiritual awakening, the musical talent, the lyrical arc, so realistically present in his work, reveal the echo of the past as of a present.
He studied double bass with M° Corrado Penta and cello with M° Amedeo Baldovino, at the “F.Morlacchi” State Conservatory of Music in Perugia, where he graduated with full marks and honorable mention in 1970. Since 1963 Since 1972, during his musical studies, he was principal double bass soloist of the "Orchestra da Camera di Perugia" carrying out an intense concert activity under the direction, among others, of Marcel Couraud, Piero Guarino and Vittorio Negri.
He obtained the 1st GAUDEAMUS Prize, at the “International Competition for Interpreters of Contemporary Music”, Rotterdam 1975 and the KRANICHSTEINER MUSIKPREIS for interpretation, at the “Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik“, Darmstadt 1976.
He has played as a soloist in the most important international festivals and with the main European orchestras and ensembles and under the direction, among others, of: Ernest Bour, Peter Burwik, Josif Conta, Othmar Costa, Mircea Cristescu, Elgar Howarth, Christopher Keene, Bernhard Kontarsky, Armando Krieger, Jerzy Maksymiuk, Yun Andreas Märkl, Andzrey Markowski, Jacques Mercier, Luca Pfaff, Yves Prin, Jerzy Salwarowski, Piotr Warzecha, Hans Zender.

He starred with Marcel Marceau in Roberto Aguerre's film "In Praise of Madness" at the 1985 Venice Biennale.
He was holder of the double bass chair at the "Santa Cecilia" State Music Conservatory in Rome.
He was a lecturer from 1984 to 1994 at the "Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik" in Darmstadt and has held courses in interpretation and master classes in Europe, Latin America and Asia.
He was President of the "International School of High Musical Improvement".
In 1996 he obtained the "Stipendium" of the DAAD - Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst, as a foreign artist invited to reside in Berlin.
In 1998 he represented Italy and European contemporary music, inaugurating the "Total Music Meeting" Festival in Berlin.
In August 2000 he participated with the "Pythagoras String Quintet" in the inauguration of the "Goethe-Geburtstag" in Weimar, presenting the world premiere of the his version for 2 violins, viola, cello and double bass, of Franz Schubert's Streichquintett in C.
In September 2001 he inaugurated the “Carmelo Bene Arte” Festival with Carmelo Bene.
Again in 2001 the magazine "The Wire" reviewed the CD "Fluvine" with compositions by him, Edizioni Ampersand, as first in the list of the 20 best-selling contemporary classical music CDs in the United States of America and England. In 2004 in Rome, in Campidoglio, with the Patronage of the Carmelo Bene Foundation, he presented with Davide Riboli, in world premiere and with his original music, the poetic work "l mal de' fiori" by Carmelo Bene.
In 2006 he participated in the “World Bass Festival” in Wroclaw.

Contrabbassista e compositore, è stato uno dei più originali protagonisti della musica nel XX secolo creando una nuova letteratura per il contrabbasso solista.
Ha creato nuove tecniche di produzione sonora e di espressione musicale per gli strumenti ad arco. L’aspetto della visualità, il gesto che precede il suono, le sue “sculture sonore” hanno proposto una nuova psicologia dell’ascolto. L’evento timbrico inaudito, l’invenzione strumentale, il risveglio spirituale, il talento musicale, l’arco lirico, così realisticamente presenti nella sua opera, rivelano l’eco del passato come di un presente.
Ha studiato contrabbasso con il M° Corrado Penta e violoncello con il M° Amedeo Baldovino, presso il Conservatorio di Musica di Stato “F.Morlacchi” di Perugia, ove si è diplomato a pieni voti e con menzione di merito nel 1970. Dal 1963 al 1972, durante i suoi studi musicali, è stato Primo Contrabbasso solista della “Orchestra da Camera di Perugia” svolgendo un’intesa attività concertistica sotto la direzione, tra gli altri, di Marcel Couraud, Piero Guarino e Vittorio Negri.
Ha ottenuto il I Premio GAUDEAMUS, all' “International Competition for Interpreters of Contemporary Music”, Rotterdam 1975 e il KRANICHSTEINER MUSIKPREIS per l’interpretazione, all' “Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik“, Darmstadt 1976.

È stato protagonista con Marcel Marceau nel film “Elogio della pazzia” di Roberto Aguerre alla Biennale di Venezia 1985.
È stato Titolare della Cattedra di Contrabbasso presso il Conservatorio di Musica di Stato “Santa Cecilia” di Roma.
È stato docente dal 1984 al 1994 allo “Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik” di Darmstadt e ha tenuto corsi d’interpretazione e master class in Europa, America latina e Asia.
È stato Presidente della “Scuola Internazionale d’Alto Perfezionamento Musicale”.
Nel 1996 ha ottenuto lo “Stipendium” della DAAD - Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst, quale artista straniero invitato a risiedere a Berlino.
Nel 1998 ha rappresentato l’Italia e la musica contemporanea europea, inaugurando il Festival “Total Music Meeting” di Berlino.
Nell’agosto del 2000 ha partecipato con il “Pythagoras String Quintet” all’inaugurazione del “Goethe-Geburtstag” a Weimar, presentando la prima esecuzione assoluta della sua versione per 2 violini, viola, violoncello e contrabbasso, dello Streichquintett in C di Franz Schubert.
Nel settembre 2001 ha inaugurato con Carmelo Bene il Festival “Carmelo Bene Arte”.
Ancora nel 2001 la rivista “The Wire” ha recensito il CD “Fluvine” con sue composizioni, Edizioni Ampersand, come primo nella lista dei 20 CD di musica classica contemporanea più venduti negli Stati Uniti d’America ed Inghilterra. Nel 2004 a Roma, in Campidoglio, con il Patrocinio della Fondazione Carmelo Bene, ha presentato con Davide Riboli, in prima esecuzione assoluta e con sue musiche originali, l’opera poetica “l mal de’ fiori” di Carmelo Bene.
Nel 2006 ha partecipato al “World Bass Festival” a Wroclaw.
