Working Terriers

Fen Pest & Natural Pest Control

Little Dogs Making A Big Impact.

Where normal pest control measures have been ineffective, or not properly maintained. Infestations can grow to be a costly and significant issue around farms and landfill sites. In fact left unchecked, these can spiral out of control, anywhere that has a sufficient food and water source, to support a rodent colony. On occasion this can reach epidemic proportions, causing damage and contamination to animal feed, food for human consumption, or machinery needed for processing crops. Something as simple as a few chewed wires can lead to thousands of pounds in lost time and equipment repairs.

Likewise, for landfill sites and recycling centres, the presence of materials and waste on site, is a major attractant for rodents. For sites like these, vulnerablity to infestation is a major issue. Quite often pest control contracts can amount to eye watering sums of money. If infestations have been allowed to grow to significant levels, this can present a significant health risk to staff and visitors working within the site, potential damage to specialised equipment, and issues for any neighbouring properties, as the colony spirals out of control.

The use of working terriers, is one of the oldest and most natural forms of pest control in existence. For thousands of years, dogs have evolved to seek out rodent pests and eliminate them. Not much has changed and for major infestations, a team of working terriers are still one of the most effective methods of gaining control. The results can be seen instantly, and often only require 1 or 2 visits to tackle the most serious infestations.

For badly infested sites, the involvement of typical pest control companies would mean the use of large quantities of rodenticide, and several weeks or months of follow up visits to try and gain control of the site. Often this is easier said than done, as plentiful alternative food sources make it incredibly difficult to gain acceptance of rodenticides by rats. For operators of these sites, this all translates to highly significant service charges, that quite often yield very little result in the short term.

Pest Control Without Consequence.

At Fen Pest, we believe that by using working terrier teams to carry out the bulk of the riddance work, it opens up the option to install a normal monitoring and trapping contract, or only use rodenticide to mop up the final remnants of the infestation. This vast reduction in the use of rodenticide has beneficial advantages for non target wild life, as less rodenticide in the environment will result in less being transmitted into the rest of the food chain.

What's the catch?

While the impact and benefit of using rat packs, is quite easy to see, you would assume that getting so many people to come out to your site, would be an expensive outlay for one day of control. This couldn't be further from the truth. While people like myself, also make our living from pest control. A lot of pack members work in other industries. All of us love to see our dogs working, and more importantly, the dogs love their job. As a service, we don't charge for it, however you'll not hear anyone complaining, if you want to provide lunch or cover fuel costs.
