Sending two world-class teachers, Chengde and Yunhua Feng, to Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics (OSSM) is my best gift and contribution to the State of Oklahoma.
— Dr. Julian Stanley, Director of SMPY at Johns Hopkins University (JHU)
Both Professor Y. Feng and her husband, C. Feng “set the standard” for successful teaching. Each class lecture was well-prepared; giving students a firm understanding of each course; maximizing students’ participation and motivation in the class; encouraging pushing, and pulling students to reach a higher goal. Students’ successes in subsequent mathematics and mathematics-based courses provide consistent testimony to the Fengs’ effectiveness. Numerous graduates expressed particular thanks for their work with them. It is simply not possible for a professor to bring better organization, more careful delivery or greater personal enthusiasm to teaching than do the Fengs. Truly, two world-class teachers!
— Dr. Edna McDuffie Manning, President of the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics (OSSM)
The Fengs always used brisk pacing, clear sequences of explanations and steps for solutions to problems, good sketches and diagrams, active questioning and circulating among students when appropriate to optimize student engagement with learning. The teaching activities are well-organized and sufficiently varied. Exploring theorems in great depth so that concepts and formulae become clear and readily remembered without memorizing. Both Professors lead examples for students through their diligence, fascination with solving problems, personal vitality and willingness to help all students in all hours. They conducted and directed all OSSM mathematics competitions, assisted students in preparing for these competitions and AP Calculus Exam. They are the teachers we all want for our own children. Simply, one of the best anywhere!
— Dr. Ken Lease, Vice President of the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics (OSSM)
Under Mrs. Xu and Mr. Feng’s guidance, my math ability grew quickly as I began problem solving based competitions such as MathCounts and AMC. Not only are their methods of teaching effective, but they also take great care to handpick the best and most relevant questions for students to practice on. Outside of teaching the math itself, they emphasized good habits to have when solving problems — for example, the importance of drawing large and fairly accurate diagrams for geometry problems to help see potential relationships better. I felt that Mrs. Xu and Mr. Feng really care about each individual student’s growth, inquiring about how recent competitions went and going around the room to check in on our progress as we worked during class. They know each student’s strengths and weaknesses and often point them out to help the student improve. Working with Mrs. Xu and Mr. Feng played a very important part in not only developing my problem solving skills but also teaching me a joy for finding elegant solutions to problems, for which I am very thankful.
— Linlin Lee, Feng's Math Class of 2018, Sophomore at Caltech
Mr. and Mrs. Feng are incredible teachers that were greatly influential to my growth and interest in math. Their passion for education is undeniable. They set extremely high expectations and constantly push their students to think faster, recognize patterns, and write organized and efficient solutions. Each time I missed class, they would set aside annotated notes for me to pick up later. I remember that after every quiz, Mrs. Feng would memorize every student’s score and which questions we got wrong so that she could help us improve on the topics we struggled with. More importantly, in the 5 years I took classes from them, I never once felt belittled for being a girl or for being older/younger than some of my classmates. I am so grateful for not only the math they taught me, but also for the kindness and mentorship they’ve shown me throughout the years.
— Katherine Xiong, Feng's Math Class of 2016, Sophomore at MIT
I was a student in Mr. Feng's IdeaMath class for over two years. Both Mr. and Mrs. Feng were excellent and dedicated teachers who coached me in areas of geometry, number theory, and combinatorics. While taking IdeaMath classes, my rankings and scores in MATHCOUNTS and AMC 10 improved tremendously. IdeaMath coaching is the reason I was able to qualify for the National MATHCOUNTS competition from Texas Team, and scored 13 on AIME and qualified for USAJMO in 2020.
— Rithvik Ganesh, Idea Math Contest Math-4 Class of 2018
I always knew I am the luckiest student to have Mrs. Xu and Mr. Feng as my math program teacher since 4 yrs ago.
You are not only guiding me to develop my potential to solve math problems, but also embrace my strength to make math such a fun subject to learn.
Thank you for creating this unique learning environment for us to enjoy! By learning to solve math problems in a smart way, it brightens up my thinking skills to solve many other subjects, it gets me smarter!
Words can’t express good enough how appreciated I am to you. I just want to say: how lucky I am to have the world’s best teacher in my life!
— Aaron Zhou, 8th grader, Idea Math Contest Math-6 Class of 2020
Mr. and Mrs. Feng are two very dedicated math teachers that have taught me for 5 years. They emphasize the problem solving process when doing competition math. They are very focused on improving their students’ math skills and sharpening them so they can do the best they can in competition math. Would recommend 10/10!
— Kevin Lu, 8th grader, Idea Math Contest Math-6 Class of 2020
IdeaMath is an awesome program. All their material is challenging and they really dive deep into every subject. Mrs. Feng is a great teacher too. She explains everything in detail and makes sure we all understand what we’re learning. Even if she’s a little on the strict side, everything she does is for our good and you can tell she really cares about us.
— Alysa Zhao, 7th grader, Idea Math Contest Math-3 Class of 2020
Idea Math is a spectacular organization. The teachers are very detailed when giving explanations of problems, and they are very constructive. It is an ideal program for anyone who aspires to pursue a STEM-related career in the future because it develops your foundation in math and your problem-solving skills. I took part in Idea Math through both a Summer Camp and a Full-Year Program, and both experiences allowed me to make peers and utilize my mind to the fullest extent. During the past school year, I was in an Idea Math class with Professor Feng. Not only was he a fantastic teacher, but I also look up to him as a role model and a source of inspiration. He has been invested in mathematics for a very long time, and he is happy to share his valuable experiences with young minds. The program has not always been easy, however. I initially felt confounded by the different teaching styles and material because I have not had any training experiences beforehand. However, with a combination of Professor Feng’s constructive feedback and my effort, I assimilated into the environment very quickly. Although Idea Math is primarily a math training organization, it also teaches you quintessential values in life. It tests your ability to persevere to the maximum level. It inspires your mind to be curious when you get stuck on a problem. It teaches you the art of patience.
— Brian Jiang, 9th grader, Idea Math Contest Math-6 Class of 2020
Professors C. and Y. Feng,
My Junior Year you guys were kind enough to invite me into your Number Theory class. I was probably a below average student at OSSM, but based on a promising OKML test you guys saw enough promise to teach me. That gave me a much needed confidence boost that year. I really try my best in your class and I appreciated all of the things you taught me in such a short amount of time. I still remember many of the fascinating numerical relationships that you showed us.
Today as a Software Engineer at Garmin, working on Global Positioning System software, I use a lot of math in my work. When problems arise that require coming up with a mathematical solution I don’t feel intimidated by them, but instead find myself interested and curious as to how the problem can be solved. In think that is one of the most enjoyable things about the education that I have had, and I thank both of you for the large part that you had in it.
— John Lovitt, OSSM Class of 1997
Dearest Professors C. & Y. Feng,
How could we possibly begin to thank you appropriately for the impact that you both had on our one and only child, Zachary, during his time at OSSM? You were his “dorm parents” and, as we understand the history, have reason to share in the pride (and relief) at his successful completion of the institution. The role you shared went far beyond academic excellence, though your reputation leaves no doubt that was why you were selected for the prestigious faculty. The task you took quite seriously and achieved so endearingly was achieved without textbooks, computers or lectures. You gave of yourselves to help nurture the social and emotional development of some of our “gifted” future.
You’ll never know how many times Zach has shared stories about the “most delicious egg rolls” he had ever tasted or giggled during his feeble attempts to impersonate “how time fries.” You were there to help provide an element of normalcy during a very harried and stressful two years in our son’s young life. You have our respect and eternal gratitude. God Bless You Both!
— Max & AlLisa Hoskins, OSSM Class of 2006
Chengde and Yunhua,
I’ll never forget the first time I met the two of you. It was the 1994-1995 school year – my Freshman Year at Duncan High School; the two of you came to recruit students from Duncan to apply to OSSM. You tried your hardest to convince me to apply a year early, but I just wasn’t ready! Then you returned in 1995-1996 to Duncan and tried again to urge me on and convince me that OSSM was the ultimate and that I was meant to be a student there. I was nervous about applying, as I had many friends and activities and especially a close-knit family that I would have to leave behind at the ripe o1’age of 16. I finally gave in and decided that I had nothing to lose!
I applied, got an interview, and 1o and behold, that big envelope with my acceptance letter arrived in my mailbox June 1st, 1996. Amazingly, there were 4 Duncan students that were accepted to the 8th graduating class of OSSM, the class of 1998. It was obvious that your recruiting efforts in Duncan had been extremely successful – after all, the two of you are “OSSM”, and you provided the perfect encouragement to bring at least 4 of “Oklahoma’s best and brightest” to “Lincoln Boulevard” in Oklahoma City all at the same time.
I got the best mathematics education anyone could have asked for under your tutelage those two years at OSSM 1996-1998…. I still can’t believe I did as well as I did on those OKML exams … I think I even got a perfect score on one – thanks to your preparation and training! .., and I got to participate in the OSU Math Contest my Junior Year. I also got to go on road trips with the two of you to help recruit students to apply to OSSM (This is a funny memory, but Yunhua – you fed me some fabulous oranges during our travels to Velma-Alma, Comanche, and Duncan among other places while Chengde drove …we had come full circle together!
When I went off to college at OU, I earned automatic credit for all of my Calculus classes … I met all of my prerequisites for my Biochemistry major and did not have to take any additional math coursework in college. This could have backfired, as when I got into some of my upper division physical chemistry classes which required lots of Calculus, it had been since high school that I had done any of “that stuff.” However, I found it to be just the opposite … my Calculus training at OSSM had miraculously stuck with me … in fact, I was tutoring many of my classmates on derivatives and integrals and the such – they had just had Calculus the previous semesters at college while I had not seen an integral in at least two years! It was then that I realized and reaffirmed my beliefs that the Faculty and curriculum at OSSM really do provide OSSM graduates with a solid foundation in all areas which stays with us FOREVER … VERY impressive!
I am sure that every student that has been in your classes and influenced by your grace of teaching the “art” of mathematics through the years share many similar memories and experiences. The future generations of OSSM students are really going to miss out … I consider myself EXTREMELY fortunate to have been one of many but also the few that have been educated – and not only in mathematics but also in life - by the Professors Feng.
Best wishes for the future and enjoy your retirement to its fullest … do a little math here and there when you get the chance and don’t forget your Oklahoma Family! I am so glad that I have been able to share my OSSM as well as post-OSSM life with the two of you these past ten years. You are great mentors, but also great friends. You deserve the best that life has to offer!
— Jane C. Yaciuk, PhD Micro./Immuno., OSSM Class of 1998
Professor Yunhua Xu Feng,
You taught me all four semester while I was at OSSM, starting with Pre-Calculus I and ending with Calculus II. It was during those two years that I learned from you more than I ever dreamed was possible. You gave me a strong foundation on which to stand, making my future math courses as straightforward as reading a novel. But the lessons I learned under your guidance certainly extended well beyond the field of mathematics. You also taught me to never settle for just basic knowledge, but instead to strive for a deeper, full understanding. You taught me o put forth my very best effort, to never give up until the job was done, to be confident in everything I did, to take responsibility for my failures and to not consider my success as a guarantee. You taught me to how to be a critical thinker. You taught me how to be a successful student.
I have many, many fond memories of your classes, but the one that I will never forget still puts a smile on my face and makes me and those who know you chuckle in admiration. I was in your pre-Calculus III morning class the second semester of my junior year, and it had snowed a lot the night before one of your classes. Because we lived in the dorms, we made it to your class on time. But for the first and only time I can remember, you weren’t there on time. We figured it was because of the snow, and after about 15 minutes Dr. Lease came into the room to tell us that you and Chengde were on your way and that we couldn’t leave until the class period was over. We all went to the window to watch as the other professors arrive late, and after another 20 minutes we saw you and Chengde walking toward Lincoln School. You were walking as fast as you possible could without slipping on the snow and ice, and in no time at all you were in the classroom with all your materials. The snow was still in your hair, it didn’t even have time to melt. You apologized to us for being late, and said that you and Chengde had been in car for two hours trying to get to OSSM. We were all in good mood because there was only 10 minutes left for class and we figured we had gotten out of the day’s lesson. But to our shock, you hurried to get the projector ready, and we wound up receiving part of the lesson and staying 5 minutes past the class time. We scrambled to keep up with you as you taught the lesson, and I think we even had a special class session to make up for what we missed!
Although when I think of this story it brings back humorous memories, it also makes me think of the best lesson you taught us all. That we don’t have much time in this life, and that we should put every precious minute to the best pursuits we possibly can.
I cannot begin to think you enough for everything you have taught me. It is an honor and privilege to have been one of your students. And though it saddens me to think that when I visit OSSM you will no longer be there, I wish you the very, very best in your most-deserved retirement. I cannot even begin to thank you for all lessons you have taught me, both in mathematics and in life.
— William Atkins, OSSM Class of 2001
Professors C. and Y. Feng,
I know that you have put many great years into OSSM and that it is probably time for you both to move on and enjoy retired life, but I must tell you that I cannot imagine OSSM without you. Even as bad at Calculus as I was, the classes you presented me with both challenged me and taught me a great deal. Some of our graduating class’ favorite OSSM memories were in Prof. Y. Feng’s Calculus I. The day she said “Daniel and Chris – always together, together, together, together,” as she hopped across the room, will always be remembered by our class with laughter. And the day that she was explaining parabolas, making a thin parabola with her hands and saying, “Hallie’s face like this,” and then widening it as far as she could and saying, “Aubrey’s face like this,” is something we all still enjoy. (I still use it when tutoring my Geometry students.) We still remember and joke about all the great times we had learning in both of your classes. We definitely remember the countless night, staying up past curfew trying to understand derivatives and so much more. Some of our fondest memories were made with the two of you and I just can’t imagine future OSSM students missing out on having you both as teachers. So I guess what I am trying to say is that OSSM will be at a huge loss when you leave. I can’t imagine them being able to find to find such wonderful and dedicated teachers to fill your spots. But I hope that you finally get some off time to spend with each other and your darling grandchildren. OSSM will always remember you and be in great debt to you for all that you have done for each of us. We wish you the very best and will miss you greatly.
— Aubrey Fike, OSSM Class of 2005
Prof. C. Feng and Prof. Y. Feng,
I want to start by thanking you for being a part of my life. You touched my life in so many ways, that I cannot begin to describe. There is no way that without your influence in my life, I would be sitting here doing research today. I remember back to the first day that I met you, at summer orientation, where I was one of the students that walked out of the room with an extra math test in my hand. This was when I realized I would finally be challenged in math. I was scared and exited to come to school in the fall and begin a new journey.
Not only did you teach me Calculus and Linear Algebra (with Prof. C. Feng), but you also taught me discipline and how I could keep learning more. I will always remember the classes of Multivariable Calculus with Prof. Y. Feng trying to get the whole class to visualize a 3-D plot by using the corner of the room, and shaping the solid with her arms, or how she would have us find the volume of a paraboloid and comparing it to the amount of rice in a rice bowl.
You were always available for help in the dorms, especially on your duty nights when groups of students would crowed around tables to have their questions answered. Your patience and understanding in explaining and re-explaining different concepts to me has never been matched. I appreciate everything that you did for me from teaching me the math that I needed to know to continue in my education to being a comforting face in the dorm when classes were overwhelming.
I hope that as you continue on with this new chapter of your lives, you will be blessed as you have blessed all of us that every stepped foot in your classroom. You will always hold a special place in my heart, and in my stories of learning math.
— Morgan K. Boes, OSSM Class of 2006
Mr. Feng is not only a great math teacher but also an inspirational educator. Many years ago, when I was in sixth grade in China, I qualified for our cities’ prestigious math gifted program and became a student of Mr. Feng. Besides lecturing the math concept, Mr. Feng focused on showing us the fascinating beauty of mathematics and encouraging the young mathematical mind to think deeper. Now when my kid showed great interest in math and needed a good mentor, without hesitation, I sent him to Ideamath where Mr. Feng was teaching. Mr. Feng has a great way to explain math concepts with simplicity. He strives to get his students to find multiple ways to solve a problem, to expand their thoughts, to think things through, and most importantly to believe in themselves and to never give up.
— Cao Jin, Tianjin Math School Class of 1986; Peking University Class of 1990
From 1984-1988, during my time in junior high school and high school years in Tianjin, I attended math classes on Sunday mornings. The classes were so enjoyable, that I would forget the fatigue of the long bicycle commute to the school at the other side of the city, on my only day off from regular school.
Mr. Feng and Mrs. Xu, the mathematician couple, were the two most popular teachers in the Sunday math school. I still remembered the awe and amazement when learning combinatorics, pigeonhole principle and Fibonacci series, such simple concepts that could solve complex problems. Mr. Feng and Mrs. Xu motivated us, not by telling us that mathematics is a tool for winning competition and getting into top universities, but by showing us how beautiful and fascinating math can be. They were able to explain profound concept using simple languages that all children could understand. The classroom was very active, with quick-witted students eagerly shouting out their ideas when questions were raised. Even though I was quiet sitting in the back, I still received attention and encouragement from them. With their help, my confidence grew over time.
Like many children in the class, I love math so much that I wanted to become a mathematician. To our surprise, Mrs Xu once told us that the world does not need many mathematicians. There were so many other disciplines, she said, that require rigorous mathematical thinking. We could make great contributions to other sciences, engineering, and even law using the solid math foundation we had. Later on, I found out first hand that mathematics is the foundation of so many sciences.
In my senior high school year, after several rounds of selection, I was selected to the Chinese national team participating in the International Math Olympiad in Sydney. I got a silver medal myself and helped team China getting the 2nd place overall. Other than being incredibly lucky, I was helped by the solid math understanding and problem solving skills from attending Mr Feng and Mrs Xu’s classes. As the first person in my family to attend higher education, I couldn’t have done this without their help.
After getting a PhD in pure math from Harvard, I decide to change direction, working on something that is more directly related to the real world than mathematical research. I have applied mathematical methods in genetic researches, personalized medicine and pharmaceutical statistics. Mrs Xu was right, math is such a powerful tool in other disciplines.
Like music and poetry, mathematics is beautiful and filled with wonders. The more you understand, the deeper the enjoyment. Mr Feng and Mrs Xu have a lifetime of experience nurturing young talents. I’m so please to hear that they are starting their online school, bring the master class learning opportunity to more children, and doing the things they love the most. The joy of math is a great gift to pass on. Let the journey begin.

As a little kid in elementary school, I was extremely lucky to be introduced to mathematics by Mr. Feng and Mrs. Xu. Your teaching opened the door of mathematics to me, and showed me how interesting math could be. The weekend “math game” with Mr. Feng and Mrs. Xu was one of my favorite activities. To me, they were the brain candy men and magicians. In their classroom, my classmates and I didn’t simply learn about mathematics, we were introduced to “the beauty of mathematics”. I can still remember Mr. Feng asked us to calculate the possible height of the tallest mountain on earth, and Mrs. Xu joked about Mr. Feng confused with different vegetables because his difficulty to distinguish certain colors. (I hope my memory was accurate.) I still remember vividly that when Mrs. Xu promoted me from class B to class A, I was so excited and almost knocked over my table. You showed me the first time the beauty of mathematics and I have felt in love with math forever since I met them. When I joined Nankai High School in 1987, I recall so many classmates in my Nankai class were from the same Olympic Math School and we used to get together to talk about your teaching.
Your kindness, humor, passion, and love to math also affected me deeply, seeded in my heart 35 years ago have continued to grow. Today, I am a managing partner at Analysis Group, one of the top global economic consulting firms. I often tell my team, many with advanced degrees in mathematics, statistics or economics, “This is an interesting problem, crack it and have fun” - just as my teacher Mr. Feng used to say.
“learning is a blast”,
