Firstly, this piece is dedicated to my father, Padre Tom Hill (1933-2024) who was Principal Chaplain of the Royal New Zealand Navy, and chaplain to the Royal Family on their visits to New Zealand through the 1970s, known to the family as the trombone-playing parson after entertaining on the Royal Yacht with the NZ Navy Band. Indeed he was one of the Salvation Army’s finest trombone soloists until becoming an Anglican minister - the inclusion of a segment of Erik Leidzen’s ‘A Never Failing Friend’ recognises his virtuosity.
In the navy, the Padre, as they are called, have a floating rank, meaning that they are the equal of whoever they are interacting with. That totally suited my father’s personality and ministry style, especially as he was a counsellor and advocate for all Navy personnel from Able Seamen to Vice Admirals and their families in a way that was neither condescending or deferential.
Secondly, the dedication is shared with all military chaplains of all faiths. Padres possess a unique blend of spiritual leadership, emotional resilience, and unwavering dedication to service members’ well-being. Regardless of the branch they serve in, chaplains provide moral and ethical guidance, offering comfort and support in times of crisis, whether on the battlefield or in peacetime. They are required to be adaptable, able to minister to individuals of diverse faiths and backgrounds while respecting personal beliefs. Padres have always served as a confidential resource, providing a safe space for service members to share their struggles without fear of judgment. Their presence fosters a sense of hope, unity, and strength, ensuring that soldiers, sailors, and airmen have the spiritual and emotional support they need to navigate the demands of military service.
