Speaker: Dima Leshchinskii (Menlo College).

Title: “Recent innovations in financing startups – lessons learned”.

Date: Tuesday, April 30th at 12h30 (Paris Time).

Abstract: The past two and a half decades have witnessed experimentation in financing startup companies, including different ways of going public. While Venture Capital (VC) financing at early stages and going public by using traditional bookbuilding remain the main mechanisms of financing, continuous experimentation with new ways of raising capital and with new securities structures demonstrate that there is no universally best way of raising capital. In this paper we will briefly review some prominent innovative ways of raising capital that appeared relatively recently to see what lessons were learned from this experimentation. Our main focus will be on the unicorn phenomenon and the emergence of dual-class share structures in IPOs. We will also discuss equity crowdfunding, Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs), and such forms of IPOs as auctions, SPACs, and direct listings. We will compare these methods based on such criteria as amount of capital raised, founders control, information production, costs, and time horizon.
