FSPL also has a core group and committees composed of our co-officers in our respective organizations.
FSPL-USPP worked closely with the Office of Representative Arlene D. Brosas in crafting HB 3398 amending RA 8972. Cong. Brosas and Kabataan Party List Representative Sarah Elago filed House bill 3398 on August 31, 2016, with some FUSPP board members in attendance. A press conference was held after the filing.
As part of our advocacy campaign, we declared this as National Social Media Day for Solo Parents, spreading the hashtags #IamendRA8972NowNa!, and #Isupportsoloparents to drumbeat the need to amend the law to provide additional benefits to solo parents and their children.
Last March 8, 2017, International Women’s Day, we successfully launched the 1 Million Signature Campaign to push for the amendments to RA 8972 during a program held at Bonifacio Shrine. The Signature Campaign aims to gather 1 million signatures to pressure HOR and the Senate to immediately pass the amendments to RA 8972 which was enacted way back in 2000. Unlike other vulnerable sectors, i.e., senior citizens and persons with disabilities, laws and state policies addressing the issues and concerns of solo parents languish. There are 12 bills pending in Congress and 5 in the Senate which seeks to amend RA 8972.
The Committee on Revision of Laws has formed a Technical Working Group (TWG) to discuss and consolidate the provisions of the 12 bills. The undersigned, together with the other officers and board members of FSPL-USPP are members of the TWG and attends the hearings and meetings.
