Public and police response was incredibly swift following the death of Poole, however, it did take the murder of a white man to get the public’s attention despite earlier unexplained deaths of black men in the surrounding community.
By the start of 1937, reports on the Black Legion became hard to find, as two movies about the group – “Legion of Terror” and “Black Legion” – came out around the same time. Then, it seemed both the collective history and saga the public endured with the discovery of the Black Legion, as well as the group itself, disappeared into thin air.
Intense, focused documentation specifically about the group is also practically invisible, and the total reach of the group then – or if it exists now – and the extent of their violence, remains unknown.
