SUBMIT

Fang & Flower is looking for the Gothic in any form that may take. We will accept any genre of writing as long as it can still be considered Gothic (this includes Gothic horror, romance, fantasy, etc.). We're here for the unsettling family secrets, the rot beneath the manor's floorboards, the monsters that lie hidden inside of us. You may be as literal or as creative with the prompt as you wish (we encourage out-of-the-box thinking), so long as your work reflects it in some way. 

Fang & Flower accepts:

• Poetry: Up to 3 poems (maximum of 1,000 words per poem)

• Prose: Short stories and flash fiction (maximum of 3,000 words, only one submission per person)

• Essays: We will accept only one essay per issue in order to 1) keep the primary focus on the fiction work we receive, and 2) give each essay a more resonant presence in the issue (maximum of 3,000 words and only one submission per person).

• Visual art: Photography, illustrations, paintings, collages, any kind of visual art you can think up. It can be physical or digital as long as it is able to be submitted as a JPEG or similar (may submit up to 3 works of art).

For ease of reading, we would appreciate all written submissions being submitted with standard formatting (Times New Roman, 12 point font, double-spaced) and as a PDF or document. If your piece requires a unique structure for artistic purposes, please make a note of it in your submission. We also ask that any submitted work be thoroughly edited beforehand; part of our job as a magazine is providing feedback and edits of our own, but we are much less likely to accept work in need of large-scale grammatical and spelling edits.

Please do not feel any pressure to make your work family-friendly! Your work can be as explicit, profane, or vulgar as you want it to be (which could also be not at all. It's entirely up to you). We will be including content warnings for each piece (if relevant) at the end of each issue for any readers who need it; you may provide us with your own list of content warnings for your piece, or we can evaluate it for content warnings on our own.

Due to the nature of the work we will publish, Fang & Flower can only accept work from writers 18 years of age or older.

Fang & Flower is a strictly anti-AI publication. We put our trust in our writers to create from their own mind without the use of generative AI, but if we detect AI-generated work, it will be immediately rejected. The same goes for plagiarism, which will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Additionally, while we never want our writers to sanitize their work, we also want to ensure that our magazine is safe for all readers. Therefore, submissions that demonstrate active bigotry against people of color, the LGBTQIA+ community, disabled people, etc. will be rejected. We reserve the right to reject any submission we feel may cause harm to our readers.

Finally, although we would love to compensate our contributors for their work, our (extremely small) crew has no money and works on a volunteer basis. The upside of this is that it's free to submit!

If your piece is accepted, we ask that Fang & Flower have first serial rights. This means that you give us the rights to be the first publication to publish your piece. After we publish your piece, you are free to submit it to other publications. We also allow simultaneous submissions so long as you contact us if your piece is accepted elsewhere.
