Hey there, fellow travelers! We’ve been lucky to visit Singapore many times over the years since we have relatives who work and live there. Every trip is a mix of revisiting favorite spots and discovering new gems! One of our most memorable family trips was back in March — perfect weather, not too hot or rainy — when almost the whole clan gathered for a 4-day adventure in Singapore, followed by a 3-day Malaysia escapade. Keep reading to find out how we made the most of our stay and some tips we wish we had known sooner! 😊
We’ve tried different ways of getting to Singapore — from direct flights with the whole family in tow to solo budget airline trips. On our last trip in March (pro tip: March is one of the best times to visit as the weather is pleasant, and the city isn't overly crowded), we flew directly from Manila to Changi Airport on Singapore Airlines. The direct flight is a little over three hours, and Changi Airport itself is an experience — with its butterfly garden, rain vortex, and countless amenities. Make sure to allow some time to explore!
Singapore’s public transport system is super efficient and easy to navigate. We’ve used both the EZ-Link card and the Singapore Tourist Pass on our trips — the choice depends on your plans! When we stayed for a week with the whole family, we got the EZ-Link card since it was great for occasional rides. But if you’re like us during our first trip, eager to explore every corner, the Singapore Tourist Pass (with unlimited rides) is your best bet! Pro Tip: Carry a refillable water bottle as it was a game-changer for us. 💧 However, remember that drinking or eating is not allowed inside the MRT or buses, so hydrate up before or after your ride! Also, tap water is safe, and you’ll find plenty of refill stations around the city.
Over our many trips to Singapore, we’ve stayed in various places depending on our budget, mood, and who was traveling with us. Here are some of our favorites:
➡️ Marina Bay Sands: The highlight of our stay with luxurious rooms and a view to die for.
➡️ Snooze Inn: For a cozy and budget-friendly stay, this was our go-to. Located in Little India, it’s close to the MRT and perfect if you want to experience a more cultural side of Singapore.
➡️ Rucksack Inn: When we wanted to be close to Clarke Quay for the nightlife and riverside dining, we chose this place. It’s clean, simple, and the staff is super helpful. Great for both solo travelers and families looking for convenience!
If you're looking for comfort without breaking the bank, here are some of our favorite budget hotels in Singapore:
Hotel Yan: This boutique hotel offers an industrial-chic design and is situated near Little India and Kampong Glam, a great option for short stays.
Snooze Inn: A cozy, no-frills stay with basic amenities and a friendly atmosphere. Perfect if you're planning to spend most of your time exploring outside!
Rucksack Inn: This backpacker-friendly inn offers both dorms and private rooms, with a social vibe and great location near Chinatown and Clarke Quay.
ibis Budget Singapore Bugis: Basic, clean, and efficient, with all the essentials covered. Its location in Bugis means you’re close to great shopping, food, and public transport.
Hotel NuVe Bugis: A charming little place that won’t hurt your wallet. It's got a cozy vibe and is walking distance to the Bugis MRT, making it a convenient spot for budget travelers. Plus, it's nestled in a lively area full of local eateries and markets to explore.
These spots provide the perfect balance of comfort, convenience, and cost-effectiveness, making them ideal for those who want to enjoy Singapore without splurging on accommodations.
For those ready to splurge and enjoy some extra pampering, here are a few luxurious options:
Marina Bay Sands: Famous for its stunning infinity pool and panoramic views of the city skyline. It’s not just a hotel; it’s a destination in itself. Perfect for honeymooners or those wanting to celebrate something special.
Raffles Singapore: A historic icon offering colonial charm and unmatched luxury. Staying here feels like stepping back in time with all the modern comforts. Ideal for those who love a mix of heritage and luxury.
The Fullerton Bay Hotel: An elegant choice with waterfront views, stylish interiors, and top-notch service. Great for a romantic getaway or a special occasion.
Capella Singapore: Tucked away in the lush greenery of Sentosa Island, this hotel offers a serene escape with luxurious villas and private pools. It’s perfect for families or couples looking for a quiet, indulgent retreat.
Conrad Centennial Singapore: Located in the heart of Marina Bay, this hotel is known for its excellent service and luxurious rooms with spectacular city views. A top choice for business and leisure travelers alike.
Every trip, we make sure to revisit our favorite spots and explore some new ones. We never miss the Marina Bay Sands SkyPark for that iconic view of the skyline or a stroll through Gardens by the Bay. Did you know the Supertree Grove is free to enter, and the light show is stunning at night? 🌳 For the kids, Sentosa Island is always a hit. We discovered that Universal Studios Singapore offers stroller rentals — a total lifesaver for families with little ones!
One time, we ventured to Haw Par Villa — a quirky theme park filled with colorful statues depicting Chinese folklore. It’s an offbeat attraction, but it left a memorable mark on us! We also recommend a Singapore River Cruise at night; it offers spectacular views of the city’s illuminated skyline and is less crowded than other tourist spots.
Speaking of popular spots, we’ve found that using Klook has been a game-changer for booking tours and activities, especially when we need to skip the long lines. For places like Universal Studios, we love using the Klook Express Pass for quick access, saving us time to enjoy more rides and attractions. It's also handy for booking entry to the Singapore Flyer or guided tours of places like Little India and Chinatown. The best part? Discounts! It’s a great way to make the most out of your trip without the hassle. Check it out below!
During our clan trip in March, we tried something different by visiting East Coast Park. We rented bikes and cycled along the coast — a relaxing way to enjoy Singapore’s natural beauty. The kids were thrilled to discover a hidden mermaid statue at Palawan Beach on Sentosa Island — a fun surprise not many tourists know about! 🎉
Another unforgettable experience was the Night Safari at the Singapore Zoo. Seeing nocturnal animals in their natural habitats was incredible. The kids were fascinated, asking if they could keep a bat as a pet!
We also explored the lively streets of Chinatown and Little India. These vibrant districts offered rich cultural experiences. Aunties tried to haggle for a souvenir but ended up paying more, saying it was "all part of the fun." The food stalls had us all in culinary heaven!
Shopping was another highlight, especially along Orchard Road — a shopping paradise where the kids had a blast with the toy stores, and the seniors enjoyed the cozy cafes.
One of our best activities was exploring the ArtScience Museum—interactive exhibits that kept everyone entertained, from kids to grandparents. Don’t miss the light and water show at Marina Bay Sands in the evening; it’s absolutely magical and less crowded than other tourist spots.

Booking Tips: Use platforms like Klook for express passes at Universal Studios, discounts on tourist attractions, and guided tours. We found it super handy to skip the long queues!
Food and Water: Tap water in Singapore is safe to drink, so carrying a refillable water bottle can be a game-changer. However, remember that eating and drinking are not allowed on the MRT.
Local Etiquette: Dress modestly when visiting temples and religious sites. Tipping is not customary in Singapore, but it’s appreciated in hotels and for exceptional service.
Travel Apps: Download the 'Singapore MRT' app for easy navigation around the city. Grab is the go-to app for taxis and private hires.
Kid-Friendly Tips: Universal Studios offers stroller rentals — a lifesaver for families! Most attractions are family-friendly, but always check height and age restrictions for rides in advance.
Health and Safety: Singapore is a very safe city, but as always, keep an eye on your belongings, especially in crowded areas like Chinatown or Orchard Road.
Tax Refunds: To claim your GST refund, you’ll need to shop at participating stores and ask for a "Tourist Refund Scheme" (TRS) receipt. On your way out, present your purchases, receipts, and passport at the GST Refund counters at Changi Airport. Remember to allow extra time for this process, especially if you're catching a flight.
Planning a trip to Singapore and thinking about a quick hop to Malaysia? We’ve got you covered! Based on our past visits and a memorable 4-day Singapore and 3-day Malaysia tour with almost the whole clan, here are some FAQs to help you out:
Transport Options: We chose a private car transfer via Klook for convenience, especially with seniors and kids. For budget travelers, cross-border buses or coaches are available from various points like Queen Street Terminal or Woodlands. Just remember to check the schedules ahead!
Immigration Tips: Expect long queues, especially on weekends and holidays. Ensure everyone's passport is valid for at least 6 months, and don’t forget to fill out the arrival and departure cards for both countries. Pro tip: Plan your crossing early in the morning or late at night to avoid the peak hours.
Currency: It’s wise to carry both SGD and MYR. While some places in Johor like Legoland may accept SGD, it’s often at a less favorable rate. Having both currencies will save you time and hassle.
Customs Checks: Be aware of the restrictions on bringing food items, especially fresh produce or meat, across the border. It's a good idea to check the customs regulations for both countries in advance.
Tax Refunds: If you’re heading to Malaysia by land, don’t forget you might be eligible for a tax refund on certain goods purchased in Singapore!
Note: There are no GST refund counters at the land border crossings (e.g., Woodlands or Tuas). It's best to head to Changi Airport before your departure to Malaysia if you want to process your refund. This is essential to keep in mind if you plan to maximize your savings!
