After an incredible adventure in Singapore, our fambam was excited to extend the fun across the border to Malaysia! With our suitcases packed, and plenty of energy left from our Singapore escapades, we decided to hop over to Malaysia. We kicked off with a 4-day exploration of Singapore and then added a 3-day Malaysian adventure, making it a true two-nation vacation!

This time, nearly our whole clan joined in, making it a trip full of laughter, surprises, and of course, delicious food. Crossing the border was pretty straightforward. We chose a private car transfer via Klook for the comfort of the seniors and the little ones, but you could opt for a coach or a bus if you're on a budget. The best part? The adventure didn't stop at the border; it only got better from there!

Navigating Malaysia was quite different from Singapore, but equally fun! For short trips within Johor Bahru, we mostly relied on Grab (the local equivalent of Uber). It's super convenient and affordable — just download the app and you're set to explore the city with ease!

For longer trips, like heading to Kuala Lumpur or Penang, we opted for the KTM train network. The train ride was scenic and comfortable, offering a unique way to see the Malaysian countryside. Be sure to book your tickets in advance, especially if you're traveling during weekends or holidays. Pro Tip: The ETS Platinum service offers fewer stops and more comfort, making it a better choice for long distances.

If you're planning to visit nearby attractions, such as Legoland Malaysia or Hello Kitty Town in Johor, consider renting a car for a day. Having a car gave us flexibility, especially when traveling with kids and seniors, and it was easy to navigate with Google Maps or Waze.

For those interested in a cultural experience, public buses (like the Causeway Link buses) are a budget-friendly option for hopping across the border between Singapore and Johor Bahru. Just remember, crossing by bus can take time due to immigration queues, so plan ahead!

When traveling by bus between major cities, choose the executive or VIP buses for added comfort and amenities like Wi-Fi and reclining seats — it's worth the extra few ringgit!

And for a smooth return trip to Singapore, we recommend crossing the border during non-peak hours (early morning or late night). Also, keep in mind there are no GST refund counters at the land border, so if you’re looking to get your tax refund from Singapore purchases, it’s best to head over to Changi Airport before making your way to Malaysia.

This approach helped us explore comfortably without the stress of navigating busy routes, and it made our cross-border journey a breeze!

Holiday Villa Johor Bahru City Centre: We chose this hotel for its spacious family rooms and convenient location near shopping malls and eateries. The rooftop pool was a huge hit with the kids, and the adults loved unwinding there after a day of exploring. We booked it through Agoda, and it was perfect for our group size, providing both comfort and affordability.

Petronas Towers: The iconic Petronas Towers were a highlight of our trip. The view from the top was breathtaking, and the kids couldn't stop marveling at the twin skyscrapers. 👉  Genting Highlands: The cool climate and stunning views made Genting Highlands a family favorite. The cable car ride offered panoramic views of the lush mountains and city below. The Blue Sky Carousel at the Genting Highlands theme park was another highlight, bringing smiles and joy to everyone. For those who love a bit of thrill, check out the SkyAvenue Mall with its indoor theme park and a wide range of dining options.

👉 KL City Gallery: We had fun learning about the history and culture of Kuala Lumpur at the KL City Gallery. The interactive exhibits and miniature models were a hit with everyone. The highlight? Watching a light and sound show that brought the city’s vibrant story to life!

Petronas Towers Group Photo: We captured a perfect group photo with the Petronas Towers in the background. The kids were thrilled, and the seniors enjoyed the architectural marvel. Make sure to visit early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid crowds and get that perfect shot!

👉 Night Market Adventure: The bustling night markets were a feast for the senses. We indulged in local delicacies and shopped for unique souvenirs. The lively atmosphere and delicious food made it an unforgettable experience. We recommend the Jalan Alor Night Market for an authentic taste of Malaysian street food.

👉 Art Gallery Fun: We visited a fascinating art gallery where some had a blast posing with various installations. Their favorite was pretending to hold up a cityscape and balancing the moon over a cosmic landscape, much to everyone's amusement. Don't forget to check out the rotating exhibitions for a fresh experience each time you visit!

👉 Genting Highlands Excursion: The Genting Skyway cable car ride was an exhilarating experience. Despite the misty weather, the views were spectacular, and the kids were excited to see the mountains and forests from above. Try the indoor snow park if you want a break from the tropical heat — it's like stepping into a winter wonderland!

Malaysia’s culinary scene is as diverse as its culture! Here are some of the standout dishes we tried:

Nasi Lemak: The national dish of Malaysia, with fragrant rice cooked in coconut milk, served with spicy sambal, crispy anchovies, peanuts, and boiled egg. We had the best version at Village Park Restaurant in Kuala Lumpur!

Penang Assam Laksa: A tangy and spicy fish-based noodle soup that was unlike anything we’d tasted in Singapore. We found the best one at Pasar Air Itam in Penang.

Char Kway Teow: Flat rice noodles stir-fried with prawns, eggs, and Chinese sausages. Deliciously smoky, we found our favorite version in the hawker stalls of Georgetown, Penang.

Satay Celup, Malacca: Think of it like a steamboat or hotpot but with peanut sauce! You dip skewers of meat, seafood, and veggies into a pot of boiling, spicy peanut sauce. We tried it at Capitol Satay, and it was an unforgettable experience!

Legoland Malaysia, Johor Bahru: A must-visit for families with kids, Legoland Malaysia is known for its interactive rides, live shows, and miniature landmarks made entirely of LEGO bricks. Visitors rave about the water park and SEA LIFE aquarium, making it an all-in-one destination for a fun-filled day. For a smoother experience, consider purchasing an express pass, especially during peak times or school holidays!

Batu Caves, Kuala Lumpur: Famous for its towering golden statue of Lord Murugan and the 272 steps leading up to a series of limestone caves, Batu Caves is a vibrant cultural and spiritual destination. Travelers love the colorful steps and the view from the top, and the experience is said to be even more magical during the Thaipusam Festival. Penang Hill & Kek Lok Si Temple: Known for breathtaking views over Georgetown, Penang Hill is a favorite for those who love a mix of nature and history. Ride the funicular train to the top, then visit Kek Lok Si Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia, famous for its stunning architecture, serene gardens, and towering pagodas. Many travelers recommend catching the sunset from Penang Hill—it’s said to be unforgettable!
