Mr. Dixie

Scrap Metal Cowboy

DescriptionSince 1962, Mr. Dixie has pointed the way to Dixie Metal Sheet Works in Falls Church. Comprised of a wind-turbine ventilator head, air conditioning unit parts as well as sheet metal painted in red and black, the distinctive twelve-foot sculpture resembles a blend of cowboy and Tin Man character from the Wizard of Oz.

Designed originally as a moveable mannequin, Mr. Dixie debuted in the City’s Memorial Day Parade as a creative way to advertise the business before becoming a well-known road-side attraction. For 30 years, he stood atop Hazelton Laboratories in Falls Church. Reportedly the squeaky sounds emitted by his turbine head spinning on windy days disturbed the lab animals down below and Dr. Hazelton requested that the sculpture be taken down from the roof. After the attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001, his owners repainted him in patriotic red and blue.

Today Mr. Dixie’s head no longer spins and his colors have been restored to their original red and black. Since moving to his streetside location, Mr. Dixie has gained notoriety in online guides and inspired many photographers and visitors who stop by Gordon Road to capture pictures of, and with him, at different times of day. Families stopping by with children should watch for moving vehicles in the parking area.
