Traffic Patterns - Reminders

As is always the case when hundreds of people attempt to go to the same place at the same time, it's important to hold true to our agreed upon traffic patterns. This not only keeps us all safe, but will help to run our routines as efficiently as possible.

Reminders are below, and know that I will be working with our Complex wide leadership team to do whatever we can for our processes to run as smoothly as possible for our whole campus.

STUDENT DROP-OFF

  • Round about in front of our main entrance (North side) No parent parking until after 8:30.
  • Student drop off can also happen behind our building (South side) at the doors before our playground until 8:00.
  • Parents also have the option, with a Downtown School parking tag, to park along the south side of Grand Ave where marked and walk their students across the street.
  • Staff will be present at all entrances and our round about to ensure safety and convenience.

DISMISSAL

  • 5/6 and 7/8's will be picked up in the front of our building as cars approach the front of the line.
  • 9/10's and siblings will be picked up behind our building (South Side)

Downtown School Community,

We would like you to know that there have been recent cases of Fifth Disease in the Elementary Grades here at the Downtown School. It is a common mild to moderately contagious childhood ailment (viral in origin) causing a distinctive facial rash ( slapped skin appearance) along with rash along other parts of the torso and legs. It is most common in the ages from 5-15. Rarely seen in Infants and adults and occurs mostly in the Winter and Spring.

Fifth Disease is short-term and self limiting. It can be treated symptomatically with supportive care, including Fluids, Tylenol (Acetaminophen), Benadryl and rest. Once the rash is present, there is no need to isolate the child. Prevention includes proper hand-washing, covering mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.

Usually Fifth Disease resolves within a few days to a few weeks. If a child is immunocompromised, it may cause fever or more pronounced illness. In that case you should then check with your Healthcare Provider. Otherwise other available measures include trying Aloe Vera Gel to rash for the itching. Calamine/Caladryl Lotion is also helpful. Hot bathes could make the rash spread, so stick with lukewarm shower or bath and non-irritating soaps, such as Dove.

The Operations Staff and Teachers of The Downtown School will keep a close eye on symptoms and increase our ongoing efforts of hand washing and common area disinfecting to limit exposure.
