My first Public Health artifact is my Determinants of Health essay. I wrote this essay for the Determinants of Health class at Clemson, where we were tasked with researching a topic in-depth and relating it directly to the layers in the Determinants of Health framework. Each layer dug more deeply into explaining why and how health levels interact with each other and can be used as a solution to various health problems. For my essay, I chose to research factors influencing domestic violence and family relationships in the U.S. I learned a great deal from this assignment, along with different research methods that I still use today. Not only has this experience made me a better student and researcher, but it has also helped me more clearly analyze my opinions and the material I read.
My second artifact was from my Global Health class, in which we were tasked with writing about a country in relation to a sustainable development goal. I chose to write about Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number three, which focuses on good health and well-being. Through this essay, I utilized many resources and research conducted in Cambodia and made a direct comparison to how well I thought the country was fulfilling SDG 3. I also proposed solutions to help the country improve in this area. Through this paper, I became more familiar with the definitions of good health and well-being, how health science professionals analyze the well-being of different countries, and the key indicators that help spark conversations in developing countries to improve their status. This assignment also helped me develop problem-solving skills in a unique way, as I incorporated both my own ideas and those from past researchers to diversify solutions to common health challenges faced by many countries.
This was a CI I worked on analyzing the growing SDG problem including SDG 3 (good health and well being) and created a cohesive plan to implement.
