Sacraments

The Sacraments are the manifestation of the Father's love and tenderness towards each of us.

-Pope Francis

Tradition of Promise

The sacraments are one of the most cherished traditions of the Catholic faith, rightfully so.

Without understanding the meaning behind the tradition, we risk losing sight of the value of it.

The Sacraments are a promise.

A promise made by us to our Lord God.

As well as a promise from Him to us.

For more information about the sacraments and what they mean to our lives, we invite you to spend some time reading the resources the Diocese of Montreal has available on their website: Diocese of Montreal: Life & its Seasons

We have included links to more information about the sacraments further down the page.

If you would like to request a sacrament on behalf of your child, we invite you to contact the Faith and Family administration team at:

Baptism

Baptism is for all people, of all ages. The process to become prepared for baptism changes depending on the age of the person being baptized.

More information about the sacrament of Baptism:  Ascension Press - Ultimate guide to Baptism

For children up to 7 years old, the Baptism team would love to answer your questions: Baptism at St. Luke's

If your school aged child is not yet baptized, we would love to share with you the joy that comes when children receive a sacrament in church. Our goal is to accompany you and your child on a journey of faith discovery. Please call or e-mail the Faith and Family office so that together we can make a plan that suits your child and your family. faithed@st-luke.ca

If you are an adult who is interested in being baptized, we are so excited for you and would love to walk with you through that process. Please reach out to the office to get in touch with the RCIA team (Rites of Christian Initiation for Adults): office@st-luke.ca

First Communion

Your family will be invited to consider sacrament preparation for your child after they have been registered and participated in the Children’s Liturgy program for one year and are in Grade 2 or more.

We ask that you look for signs of readiness in your child; particularly their interest in church, ability to focus during mass, and an openness to a deeper relationship with Jesus. This happens at different times for different children.

One of the best ways to prepare your child for his or her first communion is to attend Mass together as a family, pray together at home (before meals and before bed) and read bible stories.

Reconciliation

Prior to receiving their first communion, children will be instructed on the gentle and loving sacrament of Reconciliation. Being reconciled to God is the gift of freedom from sin, which is a joyful and loving experience. Reconciliation preparation is done through an at-home module. A parent or trusted adult is able to demonstrate the unconditional love of our Lord in a way that speaks to a childs trusting heart. We will help you prepare and offer our support while you walk with your child through the process of preparing for their first Reconciliation with the Father.

The At-Home Module can be accessed here: God Loves Me!

Confirmation

The last rite of initiation, "Confirmation opens the door that leads one to develop an adult faith (even if one is an adolescent), calling him or her to grow and cultivate a faith that is more mature and sound, strong and fearless" ( from the Diocese of Montreal )

We help prepare children (grade 6 or older) by providing opportunities for them to faithfully attend Mass, serve the community, learn about their faith during a special Holy Spirit retreat among other fun and engaging events.

Children will be invited to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation after being registered and participating in the Children's Liturgy program for one year and after they have reached grade 6 or more.  If you would like to request the sacrament on behalf of your child, we look forward to working alongside you to prepare them for this beautiful moment in their faith journey.
