Networked Communications
(Chapter 3)
(Chapter 3)
While networked communications is a very internet based topic, there are many themes within Fail Safe that relate to the topic despite the lack of technologies such as the internet or social media.
Communication in 1964
The main crisis of the film is the U.S. government simultaneously communicating with the bomber pilots and the Russian government in an attempt to stop the plans from bombing Moscow. A primary obstacle in achieving this goal is distant conimmucation. The pilots can't be reached early due to communication interference from Russia, and a lack of trust between the two governments leads to the main bomb-carrying plane getting through.
Greater Communication
If what happened in the Failsafe Film happened with modern day technology, the events of the film could have gone much differently. With the invention and development of mobile cellphones, communication with Russia could have been reached much easier and faster, potentially allowing contact with the pilots faster than they would otherwise. However, it could also have gone worse. Nuclear weapons could have been launched from further away and traveled faster, making it harder to reach Russia before the explosives did.
