Information Privacy
(Chapter 5)
(Chapter 5)
Information Privacy was an apparent theme in Fail Safe, as it was during the time of the cold war, Information Privacy was critical for the U.S, as they needed to keep their information confidential and private.
The use of a direct hotline between Moscow and Washington was a prime example of keeping information safe, as it was a direct line that was untampered with. The phone line was sealed, and only accessed by the president, implying that this was meant to be a secure line that was untouched by anyone else.
How does information privacy play a part in Fail Safe?
While the movie itself doesn't showcase it as prominently, as this was during the cold war era, there were actions such as wire tapping or Operation Shamrock, which was a secret intelligence operation in which major telegraph companies were allowing the NSA ( National Security Agency ) to access telegram information from U.S citizens, in order to monitor persons of interest in the U.S , and keep track of foreign telegram traffic that passed through the U.S.Â
This private phone line prevented these issues from happening, as it was direct from Washington to Moscow, and sealed for use in only emergencies, avoiding potential wire tapping or unwanted eavesdropping on confidential conversations.
