Field studies

The field studies are one-day bus excursions with English guidance (from 9 AM to 8 PM each day).
There are usually 4-5 stations during the day where the participants of the study trip visit special sites of landscape planning and greenway development of recent years.

Option 1 - Greenways of Lake Tisza

Lake Tisza, located in the northern part of the Great Hungarian Plain along the Tisza River is the second largest lake and the largest artificial lake in Hungary. The lake and the surrounding area are a popular vacation destination for its outdoor activities such as water sports, biking, horse-riding, and more. One impressive location in the surrounding area is The Hortobágy National Park. This park is rich with folklore, cultural history, and is known as one of the most transformed landscapes after the big river regulation in the past two hundred years. The lake contains diverse wildlife and is considered to play a big role in the ecosystem of its region as it is home to many protected species. The infrastructure of this natural reserve is of high quality, as visitors and tourists from around the world come to see this exemplary site.

Program

  • Kisköre - Visit to the lookout tower of Hungary's biggest water plant, crossing the plant sluice and visit to the fish ladder (fish stairs) (walking distance: 1,5 km - 1 mile, 80 minutes)

  • Poroszló - Visit to the water and boardwalk trail (boat 1km + max. 1km walk = 0,7 mile boat and 0,7 mile walk, 90 minutes)

  • Tiszafüred - Bike Center of Tisza Lake and Balneum Hotel Resort lakeshore (800m = 0,5 mile walk, 50 minutes)

  • Hortobágy - Typical Hungarian Picturesque landscape with crane well and "Kunhalom" (Cuman Mound) (400m = 0,3-mile walk, 20 minutes)

  • Hortobágy World Heritage Site - Eco-trail close the famous Nine-Arched Bridge rest in a local restaurant "Csárda" next to a Bird Hospital (90 minutes)


Option 2 - Landscapes around Lake Balaton

Lake Balaton, also known as the Hungarian Sea, is the largest lake in Hungary as well as all of Central Europe. Its shallow water makes it excellent for swimming and sports. The wildlife surrounding the area of the lake is vastly present, making this and other aspects, including the volcanic mountains that dominate this landscape, quite unique. Lake Balaton is one of the most popular vacation sites in Hungary while in the northern section, you can find one of Hungary's most famous wine region.

  • Greenway along Séd in Veszprém, city of queens, Veszprém-Balaton 2023 European Capital of Culture (walking distance: 4 km – 2,5 miles, 80 minutes)

  • Tihany, - Visit the unique cultural, natural heritage of Balaton uplands (walking distance: 1,5 km - 1 mile, 80 minutes)

  • Balatonfüred, greenway along Balaton, Tagore promenade (alternative swimming/bathing program on the beach) - (walking distance: 1,5 km - 1 mile, 80 minutes)

  • Rehabiltated wetlands of Sóstó, birds paradise (walking distance: 1 km – 0,5 mile, 80 minutes)



Option 3 - Green Sites and Heritage of Budapest


Budapest, the capital of Hungary, has a very rich history. Budapest was created by the unification of the two twin cities of Buda and Pest, as well as Óbuda, in 1873. Buda, centuries ago, was the center of Hungary with The Buda Castle as an impressive landmark. By 1950, the surrounding settlements were included as part of the newfound capital and now it has over 500 square kilometers of land area. The Danube River crosses through the capital with more than 10 bridges constructed above the river throughout the capital. As for other landmarks within Budapest, there are two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Banks of the Danube (with the cityscape in view), the Buda Castle Quarter, and Andrássy Avenue. The study trip provided by the Fabos Conference Committee focuses on the new developments and green spaces within the city that were either designed or redesigned recently.

  • Greenways and World Heritage along the Andrássy Road - Grand Boulevard - Erzsébet Square (2,5 km - 1,4 miles - 90 minutes) (Lunch Break 2 hours)

  • Meet again at Castle Garden Bazaar - Green spaces of the Castle Garden - Up to the castle district - Developments of the Hauszmann Program (1 km - 0,6 miles - steep - 60 minutes) - Freetime to look around 60 minutes

  • Walk in the Civic City of the Castle - Fisherman Bastion and Holy Trinity Square and Mátyás Temple (1 km - 0,6 miles - 60 minutes)

Option 4 - Greenways of Gerecse-Vértes Hills


Near Budapest, in the western-central part of the country, there are two prominent mountain ranges: The Gerecse and The Vértes. These mountain ranges are famous for their history in mining and its unique landscape features. There are also a number of different sites you can visit surrounding these mountain ranges, ranging from lakes, thermal springs, caves that were once mining facilities, and noble estates. The region is famous for the white and red limestone from Gerecse Hills. The limestone was used commonly as a building material, so it is a staple in design works in Budapest. The study trip provided by the Fabos Conference Committee includes a trail of a former bauxite mining site (in Vértes Hills) and through the region of Lake Velence, that of which is at high risk of drying up due to the effects of climate change.

  • Tatabánya - Visit to the bird's eye-view lookout point of Gerecse hills and hiking centre with Szelim cave (walking distance: 1,5 km - 1 mile, 60 minutes)

  • Tata - Visit to the Fényes-spring water and boardwalk trail, of a transformed thermal water based natural landscape of a special fluctuating human influence (1 km walk = 0,7 mile walk, 70 minutes),

  • Tata - Town centre Rest in the reconstructed town centre, walk to the medieval castle and the Öreg-lake preferred by migrating birds and sport activities with special conflicts. (1km walk = 0,7 mile walk, 90 minutes), with a resting time in the town center

  • Gánt - Geological Study Trail in a bauxite-post-mining site with Mining Muesum in Vértes hills (1300m = 0,8 mile walk, 50 minutes)

  • Pákozd - Velence - Typical picturesque hilly landscape sceneries of Lake Velence, a lake in a special danger due to climate change and overuse (800m = 0,6-mile walk, 70 minutes)

Option 5 - Landscapes in Budapest Region


The outskirts and other surrounding areas of Budapest are worth visiting as well for its rich heritage and culture. There are a number of different towns and places in the region of Budapest with notable parks and greenways that are ingrained with deep historical presences. These landmarks are along creeks and rivers similar to the extensions of Budapest's green sites that contain more landscape experience and diversity. You can easily find yourself wandering in the Danube bend, the Hills of Buda, and the variety of old townships that are rich in green infrastructure and spectacular suburban landscapes.

  • Greenways- recreational, cultural landscape of Visegrád, visit Citadel of Visegrád, double castle system, heritage of Imre Makovecz, parkforest, (short walks with several stops)

  • Szentendre, visit the historic, picturesque city along the Danube, changing relation of city and the river- mobile dam (walking distance: 1,5 km - 1 mile, 80 minutes)
