Ms. Reyes

My name is Jessica Reyes and I am the 7th grade Humanities instructor. I earned my BA in English and American Literature with a concentration in nineteenth-century British literature from UTEP. I am honored to have been a member of the English honor society, Sigma Tau Delta and the national honor society, Alpha Chi. Equally, I earned the honorable distinction of graduating Summa Cum Laude. Throughout my scholarship, my research endeavors have focused on the dichotomy of social constructions, primarily evident in instances of social and political unrest.

As a literature enthusiast, I have been afford the unique privilege of combining my own personal experiences alongside those of literature’s most influential writers to consciously navigate through the, “enduring questions of the human condition”. I am particularly interested in the manner in which stories are represented and how such representations have been afforded legitimacy. Some of my most preferred authors would include, Kurt Vonnegut, Charles Bukowski and James Baldwin primarily for their unapologetic, distinctly primal and honest examination of the self. It is this unfettered desire for authenticity, which shapes both my research as well as my teaching practices.

As an instructor, I feel it is imperative that one listens attentively to the needs of the class in order to better advocate for each and every student. My objective is to encourage students to look beyond the confines of their immediate surroundings so that they might better understand themselves and the world around them.

I enjoy an eclectic array of hobbies such as reading, creating miniatures and antiquing. A displaced Victorian at heart, I collect 19th and early 20th century photographs and have a humble collection of Occupied Japan ceramics.
