Explore. Create. Showcase.
Explore and More is a partnership between Oregon State University Precollege Programs, Siletz Valley School District, and Chemawa Indian School.
Students first EXPLORE community issues through field trips, hand-on experiences, and conversations with community experts to learn about local priorities and the work being done to address them.
Next, students CREATE a unique product that addresses community issues through research, invention, art, or an interdisciplinary combination of methods. Small groups work closely with OSU mentors to take their ideas to the next level.
Finally, students SHOWCASE their work in a public forum, which could include a symposium, competition, or art installation. This celebration should raise awareness about the issues students address and is a form of sharing and giving back to the community in the spirit of reciprocity.
Our adventures would be impossible without the support of MANY other partners, including: the Oregon Coast Aquarium, Elakha Alliance, Hatfield Visitor Center, teachers, parents, Tribal Elders, Sitka Center for Art & Ecology, Grande Ronde Cultural Resource Manager, artist Kitana Connelly, Bison Coffee House, No End of Design, Ice Queen, Javelina, Back to the Basket, DAMLab Makerspace, Underscore News, and Kanine...just to name a few!
We dream of continuing, growing, and expanding over time!

What does combining STEM and art mean to you?
My art is always inspired off of real things, science, animals, and technology is a main inspiration for me. As for what it means to me, is means everything. Its the thing I get the most enjoyment from.
What inspired the art?
King Fishers are an inspirational bird and the fish represents the information and ideas we can pull out of nature. A kingfisher represents the promise of abundance, of new warmth and prosperity that is about to unfold within your life. Starting new research programs has always felt like this to me.
What do you hope people take from your art?
I want people to see that even something small can be important, useful, impactful, and bright to the world.

What does combining STEM and art mean to you?
I was inspired by an indigenous lady from Sitka Cultural Center for Art & Ecology who used natural dyes to make art.
What inspired the art?
When I was young I used to see my dad drawing and I would go look at it and I felt inspired to try and draw what he drew. I started drawing at 7 and started drawing animals/ nature.
What do you hope people take from your art?
I want them to see how beautiful the waterfall flows. I want them to feel amazed and shocked by how realistic the piece is as well as by who made it.
