Annaeus Ijpeij [Ypey]

(1760-1837)

Annaeus IJpeij (27 Sept 1760 - 5 Apr 1837) was a Reformed minister (in Essen), and became professor in the Hooge-Schoole te Harderwijk in 1799. From 1812 to 1831 he was professor in Groningen. His History of the Christian Church in the Eighteenth Century (1797) demonstrated his position as a defender of orthodoxy (for instance, in his accounts of Bernard Mandeville and on the rise of Deism in England). He was a member of the Zeeland Society of Sciences in Vlissingen.

In his linguistic research, he was best known for his Brief history of the Dutch language (2 volumes), but it was as a church that he had the greatest and most long-lasting influence, his works being quoted in multiple languages into the twentieth century. Bowring (Account of the Present State of the Vaudois Churches, 1820), for example, quotes his general work as an authority on the Waldensians.
