A calculator designed for people with dyscalculia
interface and features
DysCalculator began with a simple question:
How can we make maths less overwhelming and more accessible for everyone?
That question brought together a small team of passionate educators, developers, designers, dyscalculia experts and accessibility advocates who shared a common vision - to create a calculator that supports people with dyscalculia, maths anxiety, and other numeracy challenges.
Unlike a traditional calculator, DysCalculator has been designed from the ground up with the user in mind. Every button, feature, and visual element has been carefully considered to reduce cognitive load, build confidence, and make mathematical thinking easier to understand.
🔵 Designed specifically for dyscalculia – Created for people with dyscalculia, maths anxiety, and other numeracy learning differences.
🔵 Reduces cognitive load – A clean, intuitive interface that makes calculations easier to understand and less overwhelming.
🔵 Customisable experience – Personalise key labels, greetings, language, keyboard layouts, and decimal formats to suit individual preferences.
🔵 Accessibility options – Includes the OpenDyslexic font, colour overlays, spoken key labels, dark mode,
🔵 Multilingual support -Includes English, te reo Māori, German, French, Spanish and Turkish.
🔵 Natural number layout – Numbers are arranged by magnitude (0–9), supporting number sense and intuitive navigation.
🔵 Logical operator layout – Mathematical operators are organised according to the standard order of operations (PEMDAS/BODMAS).
🔵 Real-time calculations – The complete formula and answer are displayed as you type, helping users understand each step.
🔵 Visual mathematical language – Uses pictograms and expressive notation for fractions, percentages, and time to make concepts easier to interpret.
🔵 Shows your working – Displays step-by-step workings so users can see how answers are reached, rather than simply providing the result.
🔵 Time calculations – Easily calculate elapsed time, durations, and clock times, including AM/PM and the new Now button for calculations using the current time.
🔵 Percentages and tax – Quickly calculate percentages, GST/VAT, discounts, mark-ups, and tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive amounts.
🔵 Instantly converts between fractions, decimals, and percentages – Switch seamlessly between different number formats, helping users understand how they relate to one another and build confidence with everyday maths.
🔵 Available anywhere – Use DysCalculator as a free web app or on Android and iOS devices for learning at home, school, tertiary education, or work.
