Test transmissions should be carried out before leaving or a short distance from Control.
This checks the serviceability of the set and confirms to control which call signs have deployed.
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) dictates the standard of reporting signal readability strength and tone.
Whenever an initial radio check call is made the receiving station needs to inform the other station making the request how the receiving signal is being heard. To do this the following scale should be used:
Readability
Strength 1 - Unreadable
Strength 2 - Barely readable – some words now and then
Strength 3 - Readable with considerable difficulty
Strength 4 - Readable with little or no difficulty
Strength 5 - Perfectly readable (loud and clear)
