Packing tips
Please pack according to your own needs and experience, and here is some advice.
Clothing for the White Sea
- be ready for temperature range +10 -- +25;
- it may get quite warm on some days in August – if you’re optimistic, bring a swimsuit along, and sunglasses, too;
- but: consider packing a hat, scarf and gloves;
- have waterproof clothing (certainly a jacket, optionally – pants);
- at least two full clothes changes (in case of getting soaked, including shoes);
- for you convenience indoors – consider packing sleepers or sandals;
- waders will be provided, but it’s a good idea to bring a 1-2 pairs of woolen socks to wear with waders;
- washing machine will be available (sign-up required).
Other:
- a mug to use in the classroom;
- basic medicine you would pack for a trip, any special medicines you are likely to need (e.g. if you are allergic) and consider taking some extra adhesive plaster;
- a flashlight;
- a jack-knife or some kind of small knife – not obligatory, but is convenient to have;
- towels (none will be provided);
- you should have a notebook and/or pens/pencils for taking notes during lectures, and maybe a small notebook for taking notes in the field;
- at the field station there is no shop or pharmacy – it’s only possible to send some shopping requests roughly once a week; remember this when packing both at home and in St Petersburg (for example, if you happen to be a smoker...);
- also, for anything you need to pay at the field station, bring cash (no payment by card is possible; no ATM around).
