The basic schedule for 2018 course is below.

Topics in the city (26 - 31 July):

  • Day 1. Metazoan levels of organization. Spongia. Diploblastic Eumetazoa.
  • Day 2. Metazoan life cycles; metagenesis. Cnidaria. Triploblastica, Bilateria. Plathelminthes.
  • Day 3. Body cavities: types, features, cases and exceptions. Oligochaeta, Acanthcephala, Nematoda, Priapulida, Ehinodermata, Neodermata.
  • Day 4. Metazoan life cycles: Polychatea. Development. Metamery in Annelida and Arthropoda. Crustacea: tagmosis.
  • Day 5. Final lecture. Zoological museum. Preparation for the test.
  • Day 6. Final test + project.

At the White Sea schedule (2 - 18 August) will be flexible due to weather and tides. Approximate plan is as following:

  • Day 1. Introductory lecture. Excursion: intertidal. Priapulida. Nemertini.
  • Day 2. Enteropneusta. Excursion: intertidal. Seminar: intertidal communities.
  • Day 3. Hydrozoa. Turbellaria.
  • Day 4. Excursion: kelp forest. Seminar: macroalgae-associated communities. Porifera. Epibiosis.
  • Day 5. Scyphozoa, Staurozoa, Kamptozoa. Excursion: subtidal.
  • Day 6. Bryozoa. Brachiopoda.
  • Day 7. Excursion: "round-the world" trip.
  • Day 8. Seminar: subtidal communities. Polychaeta.
  • Day 9. Day-off. Boat trip to the nearby islands, picnic.
  • Day 10. Polychaeta. Mollusca: Polyplacophora, Gastropoda.
  • Day 11. Mollusca: Bivalvia. Excursion: Kruglash island.
  • Day 12. Echinodermata. Tunicata.
  • Day 13. Excursion: plankton sampling. Crustacea.
  • Day 14. Crustacea. Pantopoda. Seminar: interstitial lifestyle. Nematoda.
  • Day 15. Parasites in marine communities. Ctenophora. Actiniaria. Gastrotricha.
  • Day 16. Self-study: preparation for the test.

Excursion is a boat-trip to sample invertebrates with ongoing explanations and comments.

Seminar is a mostly ecological summary explained and discussed in class, either following or preceding the corresponding excursion.

For each animal group, there are short general lectures, explanations of identification features, emphasis on local fauna, practicals with identification using keys, relevant dissections and live observations.
