In education, it is crucial to promote critical thinking and foster a classroom culture of empathetic and understanding young people. We live in a world today that is overflowing with complex societal constructs and varying interpretations of difficult issues that often lead to a hesitated approach or avoidance entirely of critical discussions. As an educator, I believe in creating a positive, safe, and inclusive learning environment where students feel empowered and motivated to question and challenge these issues while of course, being considerate of their peers.
My philosophy of teaching is founded on the idea of critical thinking and the ability to listen to other perspectives in a respectful way. It is my goal to guide students through historical topics and not shy away from controversial topics that we encounter but encourage them to engage in thoughtful discussions that consider a variety of perspectives. By incorporating different teaching strategies, such as group discussions and interactive activities, I aim to foster an environment where students feel comfortable expressing their thoughts and opinions without fear of judgment but with the desire to learn!
I recognize the importance of providing students with the necessary support and guidance to navigate through these complex issues. Through the incorporation of real-world applications, such as supporting arguments with evidence that students have to search for and apply, I strive to help students understand the relevance of these topics in the context of today's society. As we know, history is not something that is only in the past! By encouraging a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of historical topics and controversial concepts, students then learn how to become more responsible and respectful citizens. I believe we can contribute to a more informed and empathetic society moving forward when people of all ages take the time to consider differing perspectives and the supporting evidence.
