During my time at Robert Morris University, I had a handful of opportunities to write feature stories on the department’s programs and student-athletes. Three of my favorite features are in the paragraphs below:
This two-part series on RMU men’s golf alumnus Max Palmer was to tell the story of his illustrious career, which was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Topics included discussion of Palmer’s overlooked recruitment, which stemmed from the positioning on his high school team; receiving a late offer from a full Robert Morris program and never missing an event from there, earning NEC Rookie of the Year honors along the way; his continued ascent to All-NEC First Team selection, despite an individual win eluding him; RMU’s run to the 2019 NEC championship, with Palmer leading the way as the NEC Golfer of the Year; and finally earning the medalist honor he spent four years chasing, doing so in RMU’s final tournament of the 2019 fall season and the penultimate competition of Palmer’s career.

This feature discussed RMU’s rich tradition in professional men’s lacrosse, as the program produced the most players of any college or university in the National Lacrosse League (NLL) during the 2019-20 season, including the number one overall pick of the 2019 NLL Draft, Tyson Gibson. RMU had 11 players on 10 different teams in 2020, which put it ahead of notable schools such as Ohio State and Syracuse, and four players served either as captains or alternate captains on their respective teams.
This feature was written ahead of the United Soccer League (USL) showdown between Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC and Louisville City FC, with former RMU teammates Neco Brett and Devon “Speedy” Williams meeting as foes for the first time since high school. Both hailing from Kingston, Jamaica, the feature looks at the duo’s different paths to get to their matchup. Williams earned instant success with USL Cup glory and an appearance in the International Champions Cup against Chelsea FC, while Brett – a three-time NEC Player of the Year – needed a successful trial with the Riverhounds to finally kickstart his career, which saw him play a single minute with the Portland Timbers after his selection in the Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft and spend a brief stint in Israel.
