Automated Writing Evaluation (AWE)
Zhang (2022) notes that automated writing evaluation (AWE) has “the potential to be used not only for high-stakes standardized testing but also for grading lower-stakes in-class writing assignments to achieve formative use of feedback” (p. 170). AWE tools have been developed for grading, generating instantaneous feedback, and providing explanations for student writing (Zhao et al., 2023).
Research has shown that these AWE tools help learners (Zhao et al., 2023):

Work on their ability to edit and revise their writing
Increase motivation for writing
Have a positive attitude towards writing
Boost their writing self-efficacy
While AWE tool are convenient in educators providing valuable feedback to learners, there are some challenges (Zhang, 2022):
Scoring algorithms will affect student learning
Teachers may neglect their role in assessments
Students may be motivated to write and learn writing strategies specific to machine scoring

IntelliMetric is an AI-powered essay-scoring assessment tool which can grade essays and open-ended questions in instructional or standardized assessment modes (Zhang, 2022). When in instructional mode, students get feedback on their writing dimensions such as organization and sentence structure and detailed feedback on their spelling, grammar, usage and conventions (Zhang, 2022). The standardized mode provides students with the overall score of their writing and general feedback (Zhang, 2022).

E-rater is another AI assisted writing assessment tool focused on providing students with specific feedback on their grammar, usage, style, and organization (Zhang, 2022).

Smodin AI Grader helps educators grade essays, reports, and open-ended questions (Smodin, 2023). For educators to use this feature regularly, it costs them 29 US dollars per month (Smodin, 2023). Amodin AI Grader gives students an overall grade assessed based on teacher-provided criteria and rubric and also provides the score rational and suggestions for improvement (Smodin, 2023).
