Pros, cons & applications

This section will review the benefits and limitations of the design, as well as possible applications.

🙂 Benefits of the design

Aside from supporting the course delivery with the desired pedagogical approaches, this design also has these benefits:

Students receiving announcements and other notifications via emails,
Students can access grades in the LMS, which allow the instructor to submit grades to student information systems via the LMS*,
Students able to use the Canvas Student mobile app to access the course for studying on the go (noted the experience may not be optimal on all resources),
If needed, students can also use the Canvas Teacher mobile app to add/edit their pages,
Improved performance in page view load time during busy time.

* I assume there are some automated process that will push the student grades from the LMS to SIS, rather than doing it manually. But I might be wrong.

🙁 Limitations of the design

There are rarely perfect designs and this one is no exception. As it is based on Canvas and suggested features changes and additions to it, we are working within the confines of the Canvas LMS.

As such, it has these limitations:

While it is mobile friendly via mobile apps, but not mobile first,
No module access on the Teacher apps,
Inconsistent UI and features between iOS and Android apps.

📜 Other possible applications of the design

If these feature are available, apart from serving ETEC 523, it has many other potentials, such as:

Similar to ETEC 523, students post and host a topic for the week and the class can participate and review,
Students contributing to a chapter for a book, the class gets to rate (this idea came from Professor Bonk in Indiana University, who does this with his students using wiki pages),
Students sharing reflective journals and peers can review and comment,
Students sharing summary of a topic, and peers can review and comment,
Students share topic related resources with peers (with or without peer review and comment),
and more.
