As a Librarian, I have seen students struggle with writing papers. And I have referred them to the writing specialists. However, when it is midnight, they cannot contact that person. Grammarly and similar products are useful. But, students cannot rely solely on AI writing assistant products because writing is also about innuendos which Grammarly will not detect. And depending on the tone of writing, the feedback received will be confusing.
As a MET student, I use Grammarly, especially when I have a lot of papers and assignments due. I do notice the imperfections of the product. However, I have learned where my communication weaknesses lie because of Grammarly. Furthermore, I think institutions are making the right decision to offer Grammarly, but the product should be coupled with writing centers or similar departments' services. Since AI writing assistant tools cannot prepare them to communicate effectively in the workforce.
