There is a train that leaves the airport every half hour between 6.00 am and 12.00 pm, and takes approximately 30 minutes to get to the centre of Málaga. The María Zambrano train station is located on Explanada de la Estación, in the city centre. National trains that connect Málaga to the rest of the Andalusian capitals as well as Madrid and Barcelona leave from this station, in addition to local trains that connect Málaga with Fuengirola, Torremolinos, Benalmádena, and more places.
You can take the airport bus (Line A) to Málaga, which leaves the airport approximately every 30 minutes until midnight. A ten-trip book of tickets for the bus ("bonobús") costs about 8,30€ and can be purchased at the tobacco shops ("estancos"). The central bus station is located on Paseo de los Tilos, in the centre of Málaga. From the central bus station in Málaga it is possible to find connections to all the provinces of Spain, as well as to some international destinations. Note that taking a bus in Spain is usually the cheapest alternative when you wish to travel within the country. Furthermore, it is the only public transport into the smaller surrounding villages.
This is generally an easy way to get around, although you may encounter delays at rush hour (early morning from 7 am to 10 am approximately and around 8 pm). It is recommended to leave the car in a supervised car park. Car rental is fairly cheap in Spain, particularly due to the intense competition between the many companies. There are both international and national car rental companies, but generally Spanish companies offer cheaper rates.
