Self Portraiture
Inhale the Stars, Burn My Lungs, conte on toned paper, 4'x 8', 2025
This work is a visual representation of three of my childhood fears: outer space, suffocation, and being trapped. The drawing is life-sized, giving these childhood fears a greater weight that represents how sometimes fears can grow with us, no matter how we try to rationalize them away.
Sisters Three: Mer, Elf, and Goddess, mixed media, 16"x 20", 2024
This series portrays my sisters and I as mythological beings from folklore. I've always been drawn to the power of art in telling a story, especially when combined with the speculative lens of fantasy. These drawings use colors, icons, and symbols to represent different elements of my sisters' and my identities, using images and fantasy to communicate to the viewer aspects who we are.
Self Reflection, charcoal, each 4"x 4", 2024
This work is a series of my eyes expressing different emotions in the reflection of makeup mirrors. The frames of the makeup palettes signify how expressions can sometimes be put on and worn, like a full face of makeup. I have always felt a sense of disconnect from my own reflection. The process of observing and replicating my emotions in mirrors had me reflecting on how the face I feel more than see is perceived by others; leading me, in a full metaphorical circle, to self reflection.
Mirrored, conte on toned paper, 16"x 20", 2025
This work was done from life with a mirror, and captured a reflection far more serious and focused than I usually see myself. It generates contemplation on the variations between a photo and a reflection, and the different aspects of ourselves we can see in each. We only ever get the chance to see ourselves through their frames.
Tired, charcoal, 18"x 24", 2022
This was the first self portrait I've ever done, and the process revealed just how little I know my own likeness. My older sister gave me many suggestions throughout the process on what to tweak to look more like me. Even so, when I finished, the eyes looked far more tired than they did in the reference photo. This drawing reflects how I was feeling while I created it rather than the reference, and opens a dialogue into how the mindset of an artist can unconsciously saturate the work they create.
ADHD Self Portrait, 18"x 24", charcoal
This self portrait is drawn loosely over a layered collection of smudged-out gestures. Each of these gestures is drawn from a different photo I've taken in the past few years, and the multitude of them together is chaotic and somewhat overwhelming. The portrait represents me as an incarnation of all the experiences, places, and people that live in my memories; someone messy and a lot and all over the place, but happy.
Charcoal
Crystalline, white charcoal, 18"x 24", 2024
Studio Ghosts, charcoal, 24"x 36", 2024
Inked Apart, charcoal, 26"x 36", 2024
This composition uses glass items to convey the idea of hierarchy and division. The difference in scale and position distract from the inherent fragility of the larger vases as they cast shadows over the tiny ink bottle.
Measures of Dysmorphia, charcoal, 18"x 24", 2024
A Book by its Cover (A Trompe L'oeil), white and black charcoal on toned paper, 18"x 24", 2024
Centering, compressed and liquid charcoal, 18"x 24", 2024
Soul Ties, charcoal, total 32"x 24", 2024
Soul Ties is a reimagining of a photo from my older sister's engagement. She and her fiance were long distance for college during much of their engagement, and I wanted to explore the idea of the empty spaces our loved ones leave when they're absent. However, distance is not enough to overcome love shared, and ties of souls don't break from stretching between two places.
