Esteban Rosales (Guatemala, 1998) is a visual artist based in Berlin. They study fine arts at the Berlin University of the Arts in the Lensbased New Media class of Prof. Hito Steyerl and Guestprofessor Mykola Ridnyi.
Their research explores the intersections of environmental and social conflicts, focusing on how technologies function as instruments of control. Through their videos, they examine the entanglement of militaristic, colonial, and ecological violence, uncovering hidden infrastructures of power embedded within.
Their work also engages with the exploration of digital media and visual cultures, addressing issues of image distribution, excess, and in/visibility. They also investigate how technology shapes perception, categorization, and the ways in which images gain or lose meaning within an over-saturated visual landscape.
Working across analog and digital media, they experiment with documentary practices, generative media, found footage and montage to disrupt dominant narratives.
