Understanding the Role of AI in Design Exploration

This experience helped me understand that artificial intelligence plays an important role in the early design exploration stage. It helps generate multiple ideas quickly and opens different architectural directions that can be developed further. By using AI, it becomes possible to test several design approaches in a short time, which enhances creativity at the beginning of the project.


The Need for Human Architectural Thinking

Despite the capabilities of AI, its outputs still require human architectural thinking to analyze and develop them. AI does not have a real understanding of spatial experience or how humans interact with space, nor does it fully understand functional relationships between areas. Therefore, the architect’s role remains essential in transforming ideas into meaningful and buildable design solutions.


Visual Appeal vs Spatial Functionality

One of the key lessons I learned is the difference between visual attractiveness and architectural functionality. AI can produce highly impressive and visually appealing images, but it may overlook important aspects such as circulation, comfort, and spatial relationships. This made me realize that architecture is not only about visual form, but about a complete spatial experience.


Limitations and Challenges of AI Tools

During the process, I identified several limitations in using AI for design:

Importance of Prompt Quality and Iteration

I learned that prompt quality plays a crucial role in the quality of outputs. Small changes in wording can significantly change the results. Therefore, working with AI is not a one-time process, but an iterative process that requires continuous refinement and experimentation.


AI as a Design Assistant, Not a Designer

Ultimately, I learned that AI should be considered a supporting tool rather than a replacement for architects. It helps accelerate thinking and expand possibilities, but it does not take responsibility for design decisions. The architect is the one who guides, evaluates, and transforms outputs into meaningful and realistic architectural solutions.
