How will I use this Content-Based Activity in my future classroom?
"The content based activity would be created to include ELL students:
#1 - Visual Storytelling. The activity would be where students use pictures to create a story about a certain topic (whatever we are discussing in Science or Social Studies that week). This way I can include our subject in social studies to include English Language Arts and include ELL students too.
-create a picture
-using visuals, student will build a timeline to show the history of the subject matter
-role play where the class will act out a situation relevant to the subject matter
-after doing the above, students will write/draw a summary of what they have learned supporting the subject.
#2 – Charades. This activity would be acting out certain foods and the class would have to guess what food it is.
- a student will draw a picture to create the food item for the class to guess
-encourage physical activity by acting out the picture
-promote teamwork with this game
-this connects new foods from other cultures to real life for ELL students
-after the class has guessed then we will say the word in English and in the native language of the ELLs
-after this group activity, the students will use art time and use model clay to make their own food item and write the word in English for display in the classroom.
#3 – Twister. This would be a group activity that will build community. This would be a great activity for ELA time or a time of get up and stretch while they are learning English commands – this could be a math or social studies activity too.
-students stand face to face with another student
- one turns the spinner and read what it says to do in English
-the other student does the same and back and forth
-the students will learn left arm, right arm, step forward, step backward, etc.
-the winner is the student that never falls or touches the mat with their knee or elbow"
