SIOP I chose was, #3 (Comprehensible Input) Earn Your Best Grades | Succeed in School With Grammarly
"The 8 Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) that I chose is #3 Comprehensible Input. The reason I chose this is because this was the hard part for me in school. I had an IEP for comprehension. This part is so important for the success of a student. All 8 of these protocols are like building the foundation to a house. You miss one and the house is likely to crumble.
To reach your student it is so important to use the language that is the first language choice. As the teacher, always speak slowly and clearly. Never move forward unless you have the idea that the student has caught on, and if you must repeat several times, that is ok. Always be flexible to adjust speech as needed such as with verbal clues/pictures, other words, etc. Not recommended to use idioms or body language. The explanation must be made clear and verbal in a step-by-step manner. Using visuals to back up the verbal is ok too.
Have the student repeat back to me and use partners initially so they can ask a partner for an explanation if they still do not understand the new concept. Verbal scaffolding is a good idea, as it restates the student’s response to correct any English grammar. Also, use critical thinking with “Think Aloud” strategies to help define definitions. This can also be used to pair with a student’s previous knowledge and expand to use with new knowledge, for example: every student will need a red crayon for this project. Hold up a red crayon. Ask the students to repeat after you, red crayon. Ask what color is this crayon. The answer should be red and if a student does not answer red, have them repeat after you and show pictures of other things that are red such as an apple, fire truck, or stop sign. This will appeal to previous knowledge and learning the color red will advance their knowledge and comprehension."
