An eSIM is a SIM card built into your phone rather than a plastic chip you slot in. Instead of buying a local SIM at an airport kiosk, or paying your home carrier's roaming rates, you download a profile and a data plan onto the handset itself. Eskimo, at eskimo.travel, sells exactly this: travel data plans on one universal eSIM, with local, regional and global options covering 175 countries and regions.
The important limitation for newcomers is that these plans are data-only. You get mobile internet, but not a local phone number for calls or texts. Messaging apps, maps, email and web browsing all work; a traditional voice call to a local restaurant does not, unless it runs over the internet.
Two hardware conditions apply. The device must be eSIM-compatible and it must be network unlocked. Broadly, that means an iPhone XS or newer, a recent Google Pixel, or a Samsung Galaxy from the S20 generation onward. If you are unsure, the Eskimo app can detect eSIM compatibility automatically, so installing it is a reasonable first test before you commit to anything.
You also need a phone number and an email address to register. No credit card is required at signup.
EDC1GB is a signup code that gives new users a free 1GB global eSIM plan. It is described in places as a promo code and elsewhere as a referral code; the field it goes into is the same either way. It is valid until 09/09/2027.
The practical role of the code is to let you test the whole system — registration, installation, connection abroad — without paying anything. Eskimo's global plans are priced per gigabyte, advertised from around US$1.80/GB, so the free gigabyte is not a large sum of money. Its value is in removing the risk from your first attempt.
Download the Eskimo app from the App Store or Google Play, or begin registration on the Eskimo website.
Create a new account using your phone number and email.
Enter EDC1GB in the referral, gift or promo code field before you finish registration.
Complete registration. The free global plan should then appear in your account's data section.
Open the DATA page and follow 'How to Install eSIM' to download the eSIM profile to your handset.
The code is designed for entry at signup, and signup codes are one-time by design, with one code per account. Existing account holders can try the VOUCHERS / GIFTS / PROMO page in the app, but whether EDC1GB is accepted there is not stated.
As a rough guide, 1GB covers two to four days of light use — maps, messaging, occasional browsing. Video streaming will consume it in under two hours. Treat it as a trial allowance rather than a holiday's worth of data.
On expiry, the picture is mixed. Eskimo states that fixed data plans have no expiry date and that data remains available until fully consumed, while app materials describe a 24-month validity window. Check the plan detail page for the terms shown on your own account. The exact country list attached to the free global allowance should also be confirmed there.
Once the profile is installed, you do not install it again. New plans attach to the same profile, and the profile connects to a new plan once the current one reaches zero, which avoids stranding leftover data. Top-ups can be bought in the app or on the website and are added instantly. Data can also be transferred, split or sent to others.
Beyond the signup code, Eskimo runs a referral programme paying 500MB of data per friend invited, alongside limited-time cash vouchers, and the app offers travel cashback through partners including Trip.com, Booking.com, Klook, Expedia and Viator. None of that is needed to use the free gigabyte, but it explains why the account is worth keeping once the trial data is gone.
