While working with the Enigma nonprofit to develop the Enigma Hub, the importance of housing support became extremely visible. Many of the volunteers and supporters involved with the Hub were experiencing housing insecurity. That winter, unfortunately, several Detroit residents, including children, lost their lives to freezing temperatures while sleeping in their vehicles.
That experience led us to develop the idea for the Women and Children’s Village, a safe place where women and children could have access to stable housing and support. But we quickly realized that one house would never be enough.
There are women, children, artists, veterans, families, and individuals throughout our communities who need safe and stable housing. When people do not have a stable place to live, many other challenges begin to surface, including employment, transportation, childcare, education, health, and the ability to focus on personal and professional development.
Through ESE, we have been developing a Housing Support Initiative built around the idea of creating home-like environments where individuals can live alongside others experiencing similar circumstances while receiving the support and resources they need to move forward.
We have seen shared housing, transitional and sober living homes, shelters, low-income housing, and other forms of housing support. These resources are important, but many of them are missing some of the additional support people need once they are inside.
Housing is only one piece.
People also need access to employment, transportation, childcare, education, community, creativity, skill development, and opportunities to build toward independence.
While we continue developing our own ideal support housing structure, we are also building a resource network of organizations, businesses, and community resources that already provide some form of housing or basic-needs support.
This includes shelters, transitional homes, shared housing, showers, laundry facilities, food resources, transportation, and other housing-related services.
Our goal is to connect people to the resources that exist today while continuing to build toward a more complete model of supportive housing, where having a place to live is only the beginning.
