A. Rhetorical Situation and Genre. Analyze, compose, and reflect on arguments in a variety of genres, considering the strategies, claims, evidence, and various mediums and technologies that are appropriate to the rhetorical situation.
Here is what I have learned this semester for this particular SLO. While I was analyzing the subjects of Rhetorical Situation and Genre, I found that the two topics were intertwined. The rhetorical situation of a piece of work will dictate the genre. Rhetorical situations include the context, audience, and purpose of an article which are common categories included when determining the genre. For example, a rhetorical situation that’s purpose is to inform the audience about a scientific text can be seen as an informative genre. While studying rhetorical situation, I have prepared my mind to pull pieces from a text to form an analysis that helps me communicate a strong argument that includes the concepts that are recognized in the “UNM Core Writing OER Textbook”. The best way to construct this is by establishing a rhetorical strategy which may be Logos, Ethos, or Pathos, then expressing a claim that can be backed up with proper evidence. This can be done in many mediums, but the strongest ones are visual and essay formats. I have learned these strategies which has led me to become a successful rhetorician.
I used these rhetorical skills when I wrote about a significant time in my life. The purpose of this essay was to express how an emotional time in my life had a positive impact on the person I am today. The genre of this medium was a Personal Memoir. The memoir I was writing needed to be inclusive to different rhetorical appeals. I included pathos to create and emotional mood, and I relied on logos to convey a citation regarding religion. Learning the rhetorical strategies helped me to write a strong and meaningful memoir.
