I constructed a footrest out of tri-wall cardboard as my first project in my assitive technology course. During this project I learned basic skills such as how to cut cardboard with a knife, punch holes with and awl, insert wooden nails, and edge cardboard with tape to prepare to prime and paint the footrest.
I developed and a programmed a simple augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) app using MIT App Inventor. This app was developed to support individuals who are non-verbal or unable to speak due to medical conditions such as ventilator usage. The app features two buttons, yes and no, each button is programmed to speak the selected word aloud, providing users with an accessible way to express basic needs and preferences. The development of this project and usage of the app allows for enhanced communication, patient autonomy, and patient-centered care. MIT App Inventor also allows the apps programmed within their software to be downloaded directly onto Android devices, making this tool easily implementable in clinical environments to support interactions for individuals who may face communication barriers.
I built an approximately 10"x15"x5" seat wedge out of cardboard. Seat wedges can be utilized to improve sitting posture and reduce pressure in the lower back and tailbone.
I developed and programmed a six-button augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) application using MIT App Inventor to help individuals who are unable to communicate verbally and may have difficulty expressing their needs through body language or gestures. The application provides quick-access communication buttons for introducing the user, sharing an address, requesting assistance with contacting an emergency contact, communicating allergies and current medications, requesting food and placing a simple order, and communicating a coffee order. The project demonstrates how assistive technology can reduce communication barriers and support greater independence in everyday and emergency situations.
I constructed a miniature prone standing frame out of cardboard. Standing frames can be utilized to help support someone in a standing position who cannot stand independently. Through the construction process of building this minature prone standing frame, I refined my skills using a jigsaw, hand saw, awl, and chisel.
I developed and programmed a talking compass that speaks the direction your device is facing when you click the screen using MIT App Inventor. The app provides verbal narration of north, north east, east, south east, south, south west, west and north west when the device is pointed in that direction. This app serves to help indiviuals with vision loss be able to use a compass independently.
I constructed a model sized rocking perch. A rocking perch is a seat that has a rounded edge on 2 side that allows you to rock in a similar fashion of that as a rocking chair. Rocking perches can be a beneficial tool for indivduals that need some movement while at a table or desk to focus. Throughout the construction of this model rocking perch I was able to refine my cardboard carpentry skills and explore using a belt sander.
