"A disruption is a sudden break or interruption. Disruptive education is, therefore, that which intends to break with the established model to improve the existing one."
DISRUPT + ed= Disrupted education
This course has DISRUPTed my understanding of assessment and my own practices, especially in three key areas: power in assessment, equitable assessment, and feedback. The overarching theme of my learning and what connects the three big ideas is dismantling systems of power in education, hence the DISRUPTed motif.
There is intersectionality between all three big ideas, especially as equitable assessment includes aspects of power dynamics and feedback.

Much of my teaching career has been focused on social justice initiatives. I have been the teacher facilitator of our school's Gay-Straight Alliance and Racial Equity Club. Naturally, I started to develop a stronger critical consciousness working with students who are marginalized. This is where my journey to unlearning began.
Considering my social identity is an important aspect of unlearning and DISRUPTing my learning. My education has been through a Western European leans, therefore I must consider how that lens filters my knowledge and understanding of the world, and also how it has created biases-both conscious and unconscious. This perspective impacts my teaching and assessment practices.
I have privileges based on being a white, able-bodied, heterosexual, cis-gendered, middle aged woman who has a University level education and a career. However, I am part of a marginalized group as I am a woman, and have experiences the effects of oppression my whole life, growing up in a patriarchal society. Living in Canada has also provided me with privileges in terms of a high quality of life, including access to world-class health care and education, while being guaranteed certain freedoms and rights.
