In this project I reflected on how social media has impacted me and contemplated how social media has affected the world.
My results say I am fairly reliant on social media, but there are far worse culprits. I feel personally I would benefit greatly just from cutting out morning scrolling. A lot of mornings before work are spent reading inflammatory media online. I'd benefit far greater from making a sandwich instead.
I'm surprised I had never considered YouTube a social media. I can't say I'm surprised by its popularity, I enjoy it almost everyday. I wonder how the more connected nature of the video sharing platform affects it's contents and me.
Social media has certainly funneled otherwise non conspiratorial people into echo chambers. I'm often recommended media from these echo chambers quite quickly after engaging with some of its posts. This has contributed greatly to the ideological divide plaguing The United States. I believe the days of net positive benefit from social media are over. Even one of my friends only reaches out to argue over what's classified as "rage-bait".
I learned that a larger percentage of older age ranges than I previously thought are logging into social media every day. This makes me want to ask my parents and even grandparents how they view the modern internet as a whole.
The survey I took reminded of my time spent without a phone or computer at all, I am convinced to bring more of that time into the present.
