FUNCTIONALITY AND PARTS OF GENERATOR
ENGINE - supplies energy to the generator
Consist of 3 parts of engine
Fuel System - A fuel injector pushes the fuel into the combustion chamber.
Cooling & exhaust system - to regulate the heat and prevent overheating
Lubrication System - lubricating the moving components with engine oil to enable smooth operation while protecting them from excessive wear and tear.
ALTERNATOR - convert the external source e.g, diesel into electricity
ALTERNATOR - convert the external source e.g, diesel into electricity
Consist of 5 parts of engine
Armature - Main part of an AC generator, where voltage is generated. Consists of coils that carry the full load current in the generator.
Field - The magnetic flux is created. In AC generators, the magnetic fields changes as the coils rotate.
Slip Rings - electric connections that conduct the current from the stationary part to the rotating part.
Stator - non-rotating electrical parts of a generator.
Rotor - Rotating part of the generator. Produces a magnetic field in the generator.

FUNCTION OF SLIP RING IN AN ALTERNANTOR
Generator needs to regulate the voltage to produce a continual current for practical use.
Generator relies on a battery to start.
Generator is operated by the control panel and covers everything from start, shut down, engine speed and AC power frequency
Function : to safely ground the generator's electrical components.
SYNCHRONOUS GENERATOR
Converts mechanical power into AC electric power through the process of electromagnetic induction.
Magnetic field of the rotor is supplied by direct current or permanent magnets.
Types of Synchronous : Hydro-generators & Turbo-generators.
Synchronous generator is Doubly Excited because both its rotor and stator are excited.
Advantage of Synchronous Generator
Produce utility-type power without an external power grid.
The unit must provide its own voltage and frequency control and not depend on the utility.
SYNCHRONOUS GENERATOR VS ASYNCHRONOUS GENERATOR
Synchronous Generator
When operating in parallel, run at steady synchronous speed (which translates to a specific shaft speed based on the number of poles).
All loads on the grid affect all generators at the same time, sharing equally.
Asynchronous Induction Generator
Are not synchronized to the grid, they start as induction motor, requiring existing grid power, and then must be turned faster than their operating speed in order to provide power to the grid instead of acting as a load.
Require a stronger prime mover than the synchronous generator does.
An asynchronous generators have no way to regulate voltage or power factor and require capacitance to be connected to support reactive power demand.
