The implementation of sustainability education across all faculties at the University of Waterloo will allow students from all faculties to further develop their knowledge, skills, understanding, values, and actions required to create a sustainable world (Nevin, 2008), in a way that is significantly more relevant to their area of study which can further improve sustainable practices in different workforces.
The lack and narrowness of the sustainability education already implemented on campus can begin to be implemented by using the following solutions:
Mandatory Seminar: This would be targeted towards all professors, deans, and developers of education at the University of Waterloo.
Professors would be expected to submit a plan to the faculty dean and
Sustainability Office.
This plan would include strategies they would personally use to incorporate environmental education in their curriculums
Final Pitch: Briefly highlighting key objectives and end goals of the implementation of sustainability education on campus.
These strategies are a potential solution to tackle this problem, which is based on the Faculty Learning Committees at the University of Vermont which also intends to:
Teach professors in other faculties about environmental concepts including, sustainability, planetary carrying capacity, and environmental justice
Provide professors with strategies to help them integrate such concepts into existing curriculums
