Project Interim Report

In this Project, a Wi-Fi topology which uses AODV (Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector) routing protocol will be simulated. In the first step, I tried to understand the concepts which are used in Wi-Fi literature including Ad-hoc, AODC, Wi-Fi Direct, security and so on. Accordingly, I selected 5 papers which are most cited in IEEE website.

The first paper provides a thorough overview of Wi-Fi Direct technology which enhances direct device to device communications in Wi-Fi ground. Moreover, they calculated the delay which appears when Wi-Fi Direct devices discover each other and establish a connection as well as the performance of power saving protocols [1].

The second paper, the authors try to examine security threats against ad hoc routing protocols including AODV and DSR in three different environments and then proposed a protocol called ARAN to beat all identified attacks [2].

The third paper presents a Wi-Fi based positioning technique to “the need for wide signal bandwidth and large numbers of antennas by utilizing the transmission of multiple predefined messages while maintaining high-accuracy performance”. Their solution has improved accuracy around 1 meter without changing the hardware [3].

Another paper first explains the concept of Wi-Fi backscatter communication and provides some solution to tackle changes which are in this field. In Wi-Fi backscatter communication, the frequency shift technique allows a backscattered signal to appear not in the frequency channel of the carrier signal but in adjacent ones, thus avoiding noisy OFDM-based carrier signals and increasing the communication range”. Nevertheless, backscattered signals are weak and can be faced with other signals from incumbent transmitters [4].

The last paper provides key information regarding M2M communications. “The IEEE 802.11ah Task Group is working on a new standard to address the particular requirements of M2M networks: a large number of power-constrained stations; a long transmission range; small and infrequent data messages; low data rates; and a non-critical delay. This article explores the key features of this new standard” [5].

In the second step, I have decided to consider other options to simulate the project such as mat lab and Cisco Packet Tracker.
