academic Service

Senior academic roles

In my (sadly, now) long career as an academic I have serviced in different academic roles. I was Head of the School of Economics (Dean equivalent) at the University of East Anglia from 2014 to 2017, and before that, the School Research Director. In 2016 I joined the Executive Committee of the Economics Science Association, and I will always be a founding member (and co-I) of the 1st ESRC Network for Integrated Behavioral Science. I chaired a similar initiative twice: the Network for an Integrated Behavioral Approach to Conflict (NIBAC), from 2016 to 2017, and the Experimental and Behavioral Economics Network (EBEN), from 2009 to 2011.

Right now, I am an active member of the American Economic Association, the European Economic Association, the Royal Economic Society and the Econometric Society. I still have room in my heart for my first (and very successful) large initiative: in 2004 I launched the Laboratory for Research in Experimental Economics (LINEEX), one of the largest Economics laboratories in the world, with the very generous funding of the European Union.

International Meeting in Experimental and Behavioral Social Sciences

Together with Jordi Brandts (Institut d’Anàlisi Econòmica (CSIC) and Barcelona GSE), Raymond Duch (Nuffield College, Oxford), Laura Fortunato (University of Oxford) and Diego Gambetta (European University Institute) I organize the International Meeting in Experimental and Behavioral Social Sciences (IMEBESS).

IMEBESS is an extremely open event, bringing together scientists with an interest in experimental and behavioral research, and a background in anthropology, economics, political science, psychology, or sociology. IMEBESS follows ten editions of the International Meeting on Experimental and Behavioral Economics (IMEBE), an event I organized with Jordi Brandts in Spain.

IMEBESS had an inaugural meeting at Nuffield College in April 2014, moving to the Institute for Advanced Study (Toulouse) in 2015, the Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali Guido Carli (LUISS, Rome) in 2016, the Universitat de Barcelona in 2017, and the European University Institute (Florence) in 2018. The 6th IMEBESS will be hosted by Utrecht University, Netherlands, on 2-4 May 2019, with Damon Centola (University of Pennsylvania), Armin Falk (University of Bonn), and Michael W. Macy (Cornell University) as our confirmed speakers.

Latin American Workshop in Experimental and Behavioral Social Sciences

I am organizing this December 13-14 the 2nd Latin-American Workshop on Experimental and Behavioural Social Sciences (LAWEBESS) at the CESS-Universidad de Santiago de Chile, with Erin Krupka (University of Michigan), Guy Grossman (University of Pennsylvania) and Dave Rand (MIT) as our invited speakers. The first LAWEBESS was hosted by the Universidad del Valle, Cali, Colombia, in 2017.

Editorial roles

I am right now an Associate editor of Judgment and Decision Making, and Journal of Economic Psychology. I was an associate editor of the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization from 2009 to 2013. Since 2014 I am also a member of the editorial board of Research in Experimental Economics, and the invited editor of Research in Experimental Economics, Vol. 18, on Replication in Economic Experiments in 2015 .

I referee regularly for the American Economic Review, Econometrica, American Political Science Review, American Journal of Political Science, Psychological Science, Review of Economic Studies, Journal of Economic Theory, Management Science, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and many other journals.

Committees

I have been involved as an external member in tenure and promotion committees in King’s College London, Nottingham University, University of Texas at Dallas, University of Massachusetts at Amherst, American University Cairo, Florida State University, among many others. I have advised and participated in research committees of different funding bodies, including EU Horizon 2020, the National Research Agency (ANR, France), the Israel Science Foundation, the Spanish National R&D Plan, the Academy of Finland (Economics panel), the English Social and Research Council (ESRC), the British Academy and the Royal Economic Society.
