Position: Game Designer (Consultant)
Duration: August. 2023 - November. 2023
Game Design: write and pitch to the rest of the team the new vision for the game.
Level Design: rework and design new levels with a design goal in mind (engaging and faster levels).
Systems Design: write and pitch new systems to the rest of the team. Making them authentic so we differentiate from the competitors
My first task as a consultant was to redefine the game so it had the desired length, it was enough unique and had enough systems to be complex enough so the players didn't get bored easily. To achieve this I dissected the game in its current status and wrote down what lacked more polishment or design direction. Below you can find the document I wrote:
The game didn't have a late game proposal, meaning that the duration was heavily reduced, specially if we talk about a roguelite.
The game didn't have a clear way of giving rewards to the players. I designed a new system for that which you can read more in the next section
I also prepared the grounds to add systems for the hardcore players that wanted more difficulty but better rewards. (Sacrifice Otters)
I kept in mind our more casual players, creating an optional difficulty selector that only enhanced how fast the player got rewards and how easy it was to unlock new permanent upgrades.
The main objective during my work in this project was to create a unique way to give rewards to the player. The idea I pitched an prototyped with the programmers was the following:
The player needed to rescue otters in each room in a given time, after that the otters that are still trapped and not following the player will disappear
The player leads the rescued otters to a beacon, located at the end of the room.
The beacon counted the rescue otters and for each amount it gave a random item of random quality (depending on the difficulty and world).
The rescued otters can be used to get better items (sacrifice), summon a minion (soldier otter), or as a currency to upgrade the main HUB.
