Department of English

About our Department:

The English Department came into existence in 1970. The Department teaches the three year Honours Course in accordance with the syllabus implemented by the University of Calcutta. We also offer classes for those who have chosen Elective English as a Pass Option.

We are a three member faculty striving together to foster love for literature. We believe in inculcating the ideals of integrity and perseverance as enshrined in the life of our founder: the nineteenth century academician and humanitarian Pandit Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar.The students are always solicited to attend the lectures regularly where the texts are taught with meticulous care. The teachers hold informal discussions and try to enliven the class room lectures with the help of powerpoint presentations and question answer sessions. In each class, time is set apart for addressing the queries of the students. The students may also approach the teachers with their doubts after class hours as well.

Vision:

Our vision is three- fold:

1. We strive to give our students quality teaching, by offering them a curriculum which is streamlined with the latest technological tools, audio visual aids, extension lectures, texts and library resources.

2. We want our students to be worthy citizens embodying the ideals of the institutional motto: Gyan,Tyag, Seba. Thus we aim to build character and always persuade our students to obtain knowledge and understand its liberal aspect which would help them to serve others to the best of their capacity. Love for literature, we believe, will empower them to better themselves as individuals.

3. We are committed to the goal of aiding the students to discover their full potential and to give them a holistic mentoring so that they would be equipped to assess their own skills and drawbacks and choose their future career options wisely.
