The JW Marriott brand was founded in 1984, with the opening of its first hotel in Washington, D.C. It was named as a tribute to John Willard Marriott, founder of the Marriott Corporation.

They represent the strength and courage of a lion and the vision and flight of an eagle.
They symbolize guardianship and protection.
The griffin is a fitting symbol for JW Marriott associates because it is known throughout legend to be watchful, loyal, strong and swift. At JW Marriott, this is how our associates guard over the hotel, the brand, and most importantly, the guest.
It is also an appropriate icon for J.W. Marriott, himself. It represents his vision and perspective in creating a world class hospitality company… and the strength and power of his legacy.
