English 20 is an advanced writing course that builds upon the critical thinking, reading, and writing processes introduced in English 5 or 10/11.
This course emphasizes rhetorical awareness by exploring reading and writing within diverse academic contexts with a focus on the situational nature of the standards, values, habits, conventions, and products of composition. Students will research and analyze different disciplinary genres, purposes, and audiences with the goals of understanding how to appropriately shape their writing for different readers and demonstrating this understanding through various written products. Writing requirement: a minimum of 5,000 words.
This class is delivered as a hybrid course. All students are expected to meet for some portion of their total class hours at the scheduled class time on campus. The remaining portion of class time is scheduled online asynchronously through Canvas.
Assignments will be due throughout the week, but I am flexible on due dates. I understand that balancing academic work with other responsibilities can be challenging, so you are welcome to submit assignments up to a week late for full credit (freewrites, discussion posts, and writing projects are all included in this policy). Assignments submitted more than a week after the assigned deadline will receive a flat 20% penalty. Assignments submitted more than two weeks after the assigned deadline will receive a zero.
This class does not have a required textbook. I post all of the required readings and materials to Canvas so you can easily access them. The readings required for each week are posted in the module.
